End Deadly Horse-Drawn Carriage Rides

Target: St. Charles City Council

Goal: Ban horse-drawn carriages in St. Charles.

A carriage horse named Cash recently drowned in St. Charles, Missouri after it ran away from its handler and fell into the freezing Missouri River. Cash was still attached to his carriage, and it’s believed that he tried to stop before he fell in the water, but the cart was too heavy and the momentum pushed him forward to his death. This death was entirely preventable, and appears to have happened because the handler took the blinders off Cash before he was detached from his carriage. The St. Louis Carriage Company fired the handler, but firing one man does not fix all of the problems in the company and in the horse-drawn industry in general.

This isn’t the first negative incident the St. Louis Carriage Company has had. Last year, the company made the news when one of their handlers let go of his horse’s reins to help a passenger. This spooked the horse, who took off running at full-gallop and swerved into oncoming traffic. Luckily, no one was hurt, but the incident shows how dangerous the horse-drawn carriage industry is in the modern world. Horses are easily startled, and with so much traffic and noise around them, they often get scared and take off running. This has led to hundreds of deaths and injuries of both horses and people.

Cash’s death shows that it’s time to end the antiquated horse-drawn carriage industry in St. Charles. Sign this petition to say that you do not want any more horses to suffer and die giving tourists rides.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear St. Charles City Council,

A thirteen-year-old horse named Cash recently drowned while attached to a 1,300-pound carriage. This apparently preventable death happened because Cash’s handler took the horse’s blinders off before detaching him from the carriage. While the handler was fired for his mistake, this does not fix the larger problems in the horse-drawn carriage industry.

The horse-drawn carriage industry is a major risk for both humans and horses. There have been hundreds of incidents over the years of carriages running into cars, horses getting spooked and running into traffic, and carriages falling over. The antiquated industry does not fit in the modern world, and it has resulted in countless needless deaths and injuries.

Horse-drawn carriages are an accident waiting to happen, for both horses and humans. Many cities around the country have banned horse-drawn carriages, including Salt Lake City, Key West, and Biloxi. Please consider following the lead of these cities and ban horse-drawn carriages in St. Charles.

Sincerely,

  1. The horses have made their innocent voices heard. Is it possible for people to change the way they treat those who deserve better? If people are able to make life easier for all creatures, what a wonderful day that would be for the world.

  2. THESE POOR HORSES ARE DRIVEN & FORCED TO WORK ALL DAY, EVERYDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RUN INTO THE GROUND, THIS POOR ANIMAL WAS TOO EXHAUSTED & OVERLOADED TO STOP<< IT COULD NOT HELP ITSELF!!!!!!! AND HE DROWNED!!!! HOW FUCKING CRUEL & DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BAN ALL HORSE DRAWN CARRIAGES NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ANIMALS ARE NOT TRUCKS YOU FUCKING STUPID EVIL SCUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    R.I.P ALL ANIMALSXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

  3. I wish every city would end this cruel tourist trap!

    • It is NOT “torture” to the horses if the laws are in place to work the horses only so many hours per day, and have them carry loads no heavier than specific amounts.

WHAT do you think will happen to the horses if carriages are banned????

      See my post below!

My God I wish they would put an end to this! And the stupid tourist and people that still go on these rides and support these assholes, they’re just as much to blame too! RIP Cash you didn’t deserve this.

    • PLease, what do you think will happen to the horses if carriages are banned?

NO its not animal “abuse” if laws are in place to protect the horses from over work and having to pull too much weight.
AND what do you think will happen to the horses if carriages are banned?

      • LAWS ARE IN PLACE BUT OWNERS, DRIVERS DO ***NOT*** DON’T GIVE A TOSS ABOUT ANY LAWS!!! EVERYTHING WE SIGN ON HERE IS ILLEGAL & CRUEL BUT HARDLY ANYONE IS PROSECUTED FOR BREAKING LAWS REGARDING ANIMAL ABUSE, CRUELTY & DEATH, OVERWORKED ETC,,, NO ONE IS ENFORCING ANYTHING!!!! IF SO, WE WOULDN’T HAVE TO BE ON HERE TRYING TO HELP ALL ANIMALS FROM ALL CRUELTY, TORTURE & MURDER. IF HORSES CARRIAGES WERE BAND THEN THIS WOULD BE FANTASTIC, NO MORE HORSES WILL BE RUN INTO THE GROUND!!!! THE HORSES SHOULD BE GIVEN A SECOND CHANCE TO BE RE HOMED, SANCTUARIES, ANYTHING IS BETTER FOR THEM THAN A LONG LIFE OF SUFFERING & THEN DEATH WHEN THEY ARE USED UP!!!

  5. “The only difference between a dog, cat, horse and dolphin and a cow, chicken, pig and turkey is perception. One is no more valuable than another. And yet in this culture, we hold the former animals in high esteem and the latter we brutalize for food. All animals are deserving of respect and freedom from violence. The way to respect others is veganism.”

  6. I’ve signed so many petitions in hopes that this evil practice will be stopped. Where is the compassion for these innocent horses who are forced to work in noise and dangerous traffic? Silly people who think it’s romantic to ride in a carriage! It’s nothing but animal abuse.

  7. I know its “PC” to want to ban all horses doing ANYTHING but looking pretty in a field…..

FACTS ARE: its highly expensive to maintain horses with food, shelter, veterinary care, etc. THAT IS WHY so many of them are put up for auction yearly, and the people who BUY THEM????? People who PRETEND to be buying ” a riding horse for my son”…..are actually fronts from the slaughterhouses……more and more horses are sent to slaughter DAILY…..or sent to Spain and France to be used as food……

DON’T you realize that changing the law to ban horse drawn carriages or carts will do NOTHING but ensure all these horses are sent to Slaughterhouses?

How about strengthening the laws that regulate horse drawn vehicles? How about making sure there are limits on the loads they must pull and the hours they work? And that they receive veterinarian care when sick or injured? And proper food? THAT would save their lives but also better their lives.

BANNING carriages will guarantee they are all, all of those now seen pulling carriages in various cities, are sent to slaughterhouses….the drivers certainly can’t afford to keep the horses as a sort of “pet”.

  8. Gaynor and John Henry says:

Instead of banning everything outright, why not make sure that animals of whatever species, are kept in the best conditions possible? For example – instead of banning zoos, make sure zoos are as close to the animals natural environment as possible. That the animals have sufficient space inside and out, to behave naturally. It’s all well and good to say animals belong in the wild, no argument here, but if they are left in the wild many species will only be seen in history books. We need rules, regulations and laws, that are enforced, not hysterical calls for an outright ban.

  9. ALTO A ESTE ABUSO INNECESARIO, NADIE QUIERE MÁS CRUELDAD EN EL MUNDO, ESTO ES VIOLENCIA Y LOS ANIMALES YA ESTÁN CANSADOS, EXHAUSTOS!!!! YA NO PODEMOS PERMITIR TANTA AGRESIVIDAD, ABUSO NI INVASIÓN DEL SER HUMANO EN LA VIDA DE LOS ANIMALES!!!! ESTO ES CRIMEN!!!!! LEYES, LEYES, LEYES!!!!!!

  10. saugna loke says:

Aren’t automobiles good enough for humans? Why the need to go backwards and torture these beautiful and innocent creatures? Please show mercy and ban horse-drawn carriages permanently forever!
