Target: Morry Weiss, Chairman of American Greetings
Goal: Stop American Greetings from selling cards that feature captive chimpanzees.
Chimpanzees are intellectual and curious animals, which unfortunately makes them valuable in the entertainment industry. The Missouri Primate Foundation breeds chimpanzees for the entertainment industry and these animals are trained and forced to put on shows or perform tricks for people.
American Greetings uses chimpanzees from this company for some of its cards. For the photos, the chimps are forced to “smile,” make funny faces, or are put into ridiculous costumes. The chimps are often trained using fear tactics and pain to get them to do these tricks.
Sign this petition and demand American Greetings no longer sell cards that exploit chimpanzees imprisoned within the entertainment industry.
Dear Mr. Weiss,
A few of your greeting cards feature chimpanzees in ridiculous costumes or making distorted faces. The chimps in the photos come from the Missouri Primate Foundation, which has been cited numerous times by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for reportedly keeping animals in too small of cages, not cleaning the facilities and for not providing enough enrichment for the animals.
Chimpanzees are incredibly smart, curious and social animals. In the entertainment industry, these incredible animals are often trained using pain and fear tactics, and when they are not “working” they are trapped in cages. It is a sad and unfair life for such an intelligent creature.
Please consider ending the sale of cards that feature captive chimpanzees. These animals deserve a more natural life, out in the wild surrounded by sunshine and friends. This cruel company should not be supported any longer.
