Justice for Dog Allegedly Abandoned with Deadly Tumor

Target: Tony Rackauckas, District Attorney for Orange County, California

Goal: Demand the maximum penalty for the woman who allegedly abandoned her dog with a large tumor in his side.

A woman allegedly abandoned her dog with a large tumor in his side. The tumor doubled the dog’s body weight and made it difficult for him to walk and relieve himself. Demand justice for this innocent dog.

Sherri Haughton reportedly brought Henry, a golden retriever, into the Newport Beach animal hospital with claims that she had found him wandering in the sand. A visible mass on Henry’s side concerned veterinarians, but Haughton vanished before they could talk to her about treatment. Per reports, Haughton has since been identified as Henry’s owner.

Henry was turned over to Newport Beach animal control, where he had surgery to remove the tumor. He is recovering well. Haughton has been charged with misdemeanor counts of animal neglect, failure to care for an animal, animal abuse causing life-threatening injuries and interfering with Newport Beach animal control officers’ investigation. Sign below to demand the maximum penalty in this case.

Dear District Attorney Rackauckas,

A dog was reportedly abandoned at an animal hospital. His owner allegedly lied to the staff, claiming to not know anything about his condition. We demand justice for this innocent dog.

When Henry arrived at the Newport Beach animal hospital, he could barely walk. The mass on his right side protruded so much that it made it difficult for him to urinate. Sherri Haughton, Henry’s owner, had allegedly brought him to the vet previously, but did not seek treatment after being informed of his condition.

By lying to the animal hospital, Haughton delayed the treatment that was crucial to Henry’s survival. We demand that you seek the maximum penalty in this case.

  1. “The only difference between a dog, cat, horse and dolphin and a cow, chicken, pig and turkey is perception. One is no more valuable than another. And yet in this culture, we hold the former animals in high esteem and the latter we brutalize for food. All animals are deserving of respect and freedom from violence. The way to respect others is veganism.”

    • So very true, yet so very difficult when one was raised on meat and vegetables, and dairy too. Also, there is an essential amino acid that people can only get from meat. I do not believe you can get that amino acid from fish, and other seafood, but I am not 100% sure because I did not think to ask that chiropractor/employer. He is basically a vegetarian, and was extremely healthy. I am not sure if he has any health problems now, because this was many years ago, but I know he is still alive, and ten years older than I.Anyway, he said that every once in awhile, he ate around three ounces, I think it was, of red meat. I do not think you can get enough of that certain amino acid by eating only three ounces of red meat every once in awhile, but did not think about that question at the time, or I would have asked him. At any rate, I love vegetables, fruit, nuts, and seeds, and especially seafood, but cannot afford seafood, nuts, and seeds. Check out the outrageous prices. All I can afford is chicken and pork, and I no longer buy pork because it is like eating a dog. Pigs should have never been put on the menu even though they taste good. I understand that dogs taste good too, because several asians told me they eat dog meat. That does not make it right. What if human meat tasted good? I am very upset about the torture, and slaughter of ALL animals, but I have my weaknesses too. It is a thing called hunger, and cravings. This world is too sad.

    • That is totally OFF topic…..you’re pushing world wide vegetarianism, which is fine, but it has nothing to do with this situation.

    • You are so right!

  2. Melanie Cannon says:

It’s wrong that she abandoned the dog, however at least she left it at a veterinary clinic. That’s better than leaving him on the street.

  3. Cynthia Mattera says:

How do you let your dog live in pain with a tumor? What a horrible woman. Thank you for charging her with neglect and cruelty.

    • I refuse to sign the petition, because we are not told ANYTHING about this woman, her finances, etc.

She COULD have dumped him in the woods or on a city street corner, but she took him to a veterinarian.

Its very possible she could not AFFORD expensive veterinary care, but wanted help and didn’t know how to get it….prosecuting her will just make it more likely that other people in a similar situation will just “dump” their dogs or cats…….

      • That’s a VERY ignorant comment. For one thing, Sherri Haughton apparently lives in Newport Beach / Orange County, which is a very affluent area. She had apparently taken Henry at one point to a vet but decided against getting treatment for him and allowed his tumor to balloon to a MASSIVE size, and it was so big that it grew around his leg, as well as his abdomen, making it hard for him to walk and he couldn’t even lift his leg to relieve himself. When she did ultimately ‘offload’ him to a vet / rescue she claimed he wasn’t hers and that she had found him on a beach. How scummy could someone be? You seem to be inferring that we should all feel some sort of empathy / gratitude to her that she didn’t just dump him in the woods or on a street corner – how bizarre. Anyone who allows an animal to suffer like this (and this tumor would have taken a considerable length of time to grow to such a massive size) and can carry on their lives as if nothing is wrong is depraved, totally callous and lacking in a heart and soul.

  4. I am guessing that this woman is poor, and perhaps even disabled. That would be a good reason for her to abandon a poor dog who needs expensive ‘treatment.’ Everybody wants to prosecute the poor, and make poverty a crime. Meanwhile, the opposite of poverty is JUSTICE. Most disabled people are chronically ill, and therefore cannot work. Many look okay on the outside, but are terminal, and too upset about that. Why did she wait so long is the question. Only she really knows the answer to that. There is no help when you are poor. Nobody gives a damn, and the love of money is the root of all evil.

    • VERY good points, and I refuse to sign this petition because we are told NOTHING about this woman’s financial situation, her ability to pay for significant veterinary care, and she certainly could have dumped the dog on a street corner or out in the woods, but she didn’t…she took him to a veterinarian.

    • Maria Mahyorova says:

You made me sing this petition. You think poverty is an excuse for cruelty? No, it is not.

    • The woman lives in the Newport Beach area of Orange County – a VERY affluent area!! Instead of guessing, Google her name and find out for yourself. However, even if she couldn’t afford the treatment for Henry there may have been options to have subsidised treatment provided, or she could have sought some other help for him WAY before the tumor grew so out of control that it weighed 46Ibs and was growing around his leg so he could barely walk and was unable to even lift his leg to relieve himself. NO caring person would allow their pet to suffer so terribly, regardless of whether they had lots of money or not. How can anyone begin to make lame excuses for a lowlife scumbag like this vile woman (Sherrie Haughton)? Anyone who does is probably as twisted and immoral as she is.

  5. Also, the fact that she abandoned that poor soul at an animal hospital should be taken into consideration. They allow women to abandon their babies at hospitals (human babies), so what is up with that? Veterinarians do not allow payment arrangements because several people have stiffed them out of money. That has made it very bad for other poor people. However, I personally know of a total jerk of a ‘man’ who allowed a desperate lady to borrow money from him to pay a veterinarian, and the lady paid him back directly, but he stiffed the vet assistant out of the money he owed her, after the borrower paid him directly, and the poor goodhearted assistant was fired for it. That old fool had dogs as well, that required vet care, and scammed the vet assistant. Also, that old jerk is NOT actually poor because he has quite alot of money in the bank, according to his own admission. That jerk is an atheist, and will get his.

  6. I am not signing this petition, because the woman could have done a LOT of worse things to the dog, such as abandoning him out in a rural area, or a city street, or other things, even worse.

She attempted to get him help….is anything known about her financial situation? Is she elderly, perhaps on social security?

All of the above questions need to be answered before we all SIGN a petition that will bring prosecution to this woman….she may not know about crowd funding, or agencies that can help people who can’t afford significant veterinarian bills…….

  7. Rosslyn Osborne says:

‘Officials said the tumor started small but when left untreated grew to a size that made immediate treatment necessary to save the dog’s life.
Officials said Wednesday that there are always options for pet owners to get care for their animals if they cannot afford treatment, including turning over the pet to animal services or seeking assistance through the Orange County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which provides low-income or homeless pet owners with food and other aid for their animals’.
….So this lady had options and knew what was wrong from other vets, but chose to let the tumour continue to grow to this size then lied about it… she caused his operation to be delayed….! Not good I sincerely hope that this beautiful dog finds a caring and loving forever home.

  8. Leveton, you are an idiot just like Haughton! The tumor took a long time to grow and that means there was a long time to do something about it! I and MANY OTHERS do NOT care about the poverty level of these kind of people. They are cruel and thoughtless and self serving. Money has NOTHING to do with common sense or normal compassionate thinking. If you think I lack compassion for Haughton’s “problems”, YOU ARE CORRECT! Unless she is mentally challenged, there is NO excuse for what she did to that dog, or precisely, NOT do for her dog. IF she is mentally challenged and owns a dog on her own…..that is a whole new problem!!!
