Commend Pizza Chain for Supporting Animal Welfare

Target: Papa John’s Pizza

Goal: Commend Papa John’s Pizza for eliminating controversial pig cages from pork supply chain

Papa John’s Pizza, an international pizza chain that has been around for over 25 years, recently began encouraging it suppliers to stop using cruel and confining gestation crates. Papa John’s will instead support suppliers who use alternative pregnant sow housing. According to the Humane Society of the United States, Papa John’s is joining over 60 other fast food chains, including McDonald’s, Wendy’s and Burger King, to ban the practice of gestation crates from their supply chains.

Gestation crates are small, metal cages where pregnant sows spend most of their lives. These cages are so small that the sows can’t even turn around. According to MotherJones, gestation crates’ floors consist of slotted planks that allow urine and feces to drain out of the cages, but much of the waste remains causing illness and respiratory problems for the sows.

In a message on their website, Papa John’s states, “We have consulted with our suppliers, and evaluated scientific and industry literature on this issue. We support the industry move away from traditional gestation crates and are encouraging our suppliers to explore alternative pregnant sow housing options. Our goal is to have significant movement to alternative housing by 2022, and we will seek suppliers who adopt a plan to implement this practice.”

We must commend Papa John’s for taking a stance against inhumane gestation crates.

Dear Papa John’s,

Your recent decision to move away from cruel and confining gestation crates will have a positive impact on sows all over the country. With more fast food and restaurant chains joining this movement, hopefully we will soon see an end to the cruel practice completely.

I hope that you will use your influence to motivate other company’s, as well as state governments, to explore alternative pregnant sow housing options. Gestation crates are inhumane and they do not offer sows any quality of life.

Thank you for taking steps to encourage “significant movement” towards the more humane treatment of pregnant sows.

By all means make their short lives a bit less miserable. But still murder them and eat their rotting corpses. Enjoy.
