Stop the Silent Extinction of Giraffes

Target: Idriss Déby, Chairperson of the African Union

Goal: Bring attention to the rapid decline in the population of giraffes due to illegal hunting and deforestation.

Giraffe populations have been massively decreasing for years, yet many are not aware of this tragedy due to how often the animals are seen in zoos and on safaris. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) reported that the world’s giraffe population has decreased so dramatically that they added the species to their Red List, which names all animals at risk of extinction. Without attention and aid, what has been called a “silent extinction” will continue to threaten these amazing creatures.

There are only about 98,000 giraffes left in the world, a near 40 percent decrease since 1985. In addition to illegal hunting, developments for farmland and mines in Africa have destroyed habitats, and conflicts between humans and wildlife have led to the killing of the world’s tallest land animal. There is an obvious need for better security at wildlife refugees and parks in order to prevent these deplorable crimes. Of the nine subspecies of giraffe, five are decreasing at alarming rates. Demand that more attention be brought to this issue so we might save the giraffes.

Dear Chairperson Déby,

Wildlife populations across the globe are declining, but there is perhaps no land more diverse or as in need of conservation than Africa. The IUCN reported that giraffe populations have sunk nearly 40 percent and that there are less than 100,000 left in the world. Hunting, deforestation, and human-wildlife conflict have all contributed to this tragedy.

Wildlife refugees and parks need better security, and people need to become more aware of this environmental disaster. We ask that you do everything in your power to bring attention to the plight of the giraffes and end crimes against them before it is too late.

We must protect ALL wildlife AND our planet – otherwise, our greed and ignorance will destroy everything around us and possibly lead to the extinction of human-kind!

  2. Marjorie Coey says:

Was there not a picture of Donald Trumps sons shown beside a giraffe they had killed “for sport” recently.

  3. Bringing an end to trophy hunting would be a start!

  4. Emma williams says:

This is so sad by the time our grandchildren have children a lot of the animals that we adore and tried to protect will be gone

    • Simon Draper says:

And humans need to stop breeding so much. Human overpopulation is the root cause of all the biggest problems on the planet which is leading to record numbers of species plants and animals being wiped out.

  5. Any Hunting is appalling & only sick in the head scum humans would take any pleasure from killing these beautiful gentle creatures. WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS ?????
