Target: Charlton Bonham, Director of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife

Goal: Give flat-tailed horned lizards protection under the California Endangered Species Act.

The rare flat-tailed horned lizard is currently facing extinction due to massive habitat loss. These lizards are native to the desert of southern California, but they’ve lost much of their natural habitat to farms and urban sprawl. To save the lizards from extinction, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife is considering protecting the lizard under the California Endangered Species Act.

For years, activists and scientists have been trying to save these rare lizards. In 2014, the Center for Biological Diversity petitioned the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to give the lizards protection. In response to that, the agency listed the lizards as a candidate for the Endangered Species Act. Then, the agency withdrew that recommendation based on the findings of a flawed review that ignored the massive habitat loss the lizards are facing in so-called conservation areas. Now, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife is about to vote again on if these lizards should get state protection. And this time, the lizards must be given protection or they may truly face extinction.

To save these rare lizards from extinction, the lizards must be offered protection under the California Endangered Species Act. Sign this petition and tell the California Department of Fish and Wildlife that you want the flat-tailed horned lizards to be given the protection that they need to survive and thrive.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Bonham,

The flat-tailed horned lizards are currently facing extinction. These lizards are native to the desert of Southern California and they have lost much of their natural habitat to farms and urban sprawl. To save these lizards from extinction, they must be protected under the California Endangered Species Act.

For years, these lizards have been in danger of extinction, but they have never been given the protection that they need to survive. Now, it’s time to protect these lizards from losing more of their home. The lizards need dedicated conservation areas where they’ll be able to live without fear of losing more of their native habitat.

To save these lizards, please vote to protect them under the California Endangered Species Act. By offering these lizards protection, you’ll be able to save a rare and unique species from extinction.

Sincerely,
