Target: Dr. John Pombe Magufuli, President of Tanzania

Goal: Thank Tanzanian president for taking steps to end poaching of elephants and black rhinos at Selous Game Reserve.

The president of Tanzania, Dr. Magufuli, recently announced that he will be implementing plans to stop the poaching of black rhinos and elephants in Selous Game Reserve. Dr. Magufuli has given federal security agencies his full support and is allowing them to arrest poachers. He also visited the Dar es Salaam Airport to ensure that the security equipment can detect hidden ivory. Since announcing the crackdown, at least 50 pieces of ivory have been seized and a number of significant poacher arrests have been made.

Since becoming a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1982, Selous Game Reserve has lost 90 percent of its black rhinos and elephants to poaching. In 2014, UNESCO added Selous Game Reserve to the List of World Heritage in Danger due to the rampant poaching. The decline in the wildlife population has also led to a significant decrease in the amount of visitors to the preserve, resulting in local job loss. The poachers are also threatening the safety of the rangers in Selous Game Reserve.

While Dr. Magufuli’s support is a huge leap forward in the protection of Tanzania’s elephants and black rhinos, there is still more work to be done. Sign this petition to thank Dr. Magufuli for his work to end poaching in Selous Game Reserve, and to urge him to continue working to protect elephants and black rhinos.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Dr. Magufuli:

I would like to thank you for protecting the elephants and black rhinos of Selous Game Reserve from ivory smugglers and poachers. I would also like to commend you for personally inspecting the security equipment at Dar es Salaam Airport to ensure that it can detect ivory.

Since becoming a UNESCO World Heritage site, the population of black rhinos and elephants in Selous Game Reserve has been decimated by poachers. This resulted in the Selous Game Reserve being put on the List of World Heritage Sites in Danger in 2014. With your help and support, the elephant and black rhino population will be able to make a comeback. This will result in increased tourism at the game reserve and a happier life for the wildlife there.

Thank you for standing up for the elephants and black rhinos of Tanzania. Now, I urge you to continue using local and federal law enforcement to patrol the park. This will help keep the elephant and black rhino population safe for years to come.

Sincerely,
