Stop Turtles From Being Eaten Into Extinction

Ben-Turtlesberger-by-Ryan-Dingman

Target: Bart R. Yakupzack, Chairman of the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission

Goal: Demand tighter restrictions on the collection of wild turtles in Louisiana, so that the population is not brought to dangerously low levels.

While some states have banned or placed restrictions on the collection of turtles from the wild, Louisiana has failed to put enough limits on how many of these animals can be removed from their habitat. It is impossible to know how many turtles have been plucked from the lakes and rivers in the state because the state has only recently required turtle retailers to record how many of the animals they buy.

The United States exports millions of turtles to China every year to be eaten or used as traditional medicine. Turtles are also taken from their habitats to be sold as pets. Wild turtles are already suffering because they have lost a lot of their natural habitat to humans. Turtles are an essential part of the ecosystem. They help to keep rivers and lakes healthy.

According to National Geographic, a Louisiana state biologist, Amy Bass, is drafting new regulations to help control the number of turtles taken from the wild for commercial purposes. In order to ensure that the turtles in the state have a future, it is essential that these regulations are passed.

While most turtles in Louisiana are not currently endangered, the wanton collection of wild animals can quickly get out of hand, especially when trying to sate the appetite of a country as big as China.  Sign this petition to urge the Louisiana wildlife commission to restrict the collection of wild turtles.

PETITION LETTER

Dear Chairman Yakupzack,

While other states have banned or placed restrictions on the collection of turtles from the wild, Louisiana has failed to put enough limits on how many of these animals can be removed from their habitat. It is impossible to know how many turtles have been plucked from the lakes and rivers in the state because the state has only recently required turtle retailers to record how many of the animals they buy.

The United States exports many turtles to China every year to be eaten or used as traditional medicine. Turtles are also taken from their habitats to be sold as pets. Wild turtles are already suffering because they have lost a lot of their natural habitat to humans. Turtles are an essential part of the eco system. They help to keep rivers and lakes healthy.

You have the power to protect these defenseless creatures from being poached for profit. Please vote to strictly limit the number of turtles collected and protect Louisiana’s biodiversity.

Sincerely,

“What kind of people” that live in Louisiana – the United States – and the world in general – would allow this kind of shameful activity to take place? What a sick world we live in. And lest we forget – the people who do nothing are just as guilty as the politicians/perpetrators who enable/allow it to happen – – –

What a surprise, the nasty ignorant chinese again, who eat anything that moves, the rarer the better. Boycott china and all their crap.

  3. Could you just stop screwing Louisiana for China…??? I mean, “Stop Turtles From Being Eaten into Extinction”, the name says it ALL……..
An essential part of the ecosystem, they are suffering from SO much loss of habitat, what kid wants to be in a world without turtles, and now THIS, on top of everything else????
AGREED, the number of turtles collected should be limited…STRICTLY limited…to protect Louisiana’s biodiversity.
And Louisiana state biologist Amy Bass’s proposed regulations re: the number of turtles taken from the wild for commercial purposes passed….

  4. The United States sets a really good example right? Exporting turtles to China for consumption, where China will torture, kill and eat cats and dogs. This is why the majority in China have little to no regard on how the rest of the world views their ignorance on medicinal purposes coming from the majority of animals they consume as rhino horns, snake, cata and dogs etc. They do not care about the lives of animals, no emotional or moral value.

China is the basis of many an animal’s woe. Let them eat themselves, savages.
