Ban Barbaric Practice of Cat Declawing

Target: Bob Andrzejczak, Chair of the Assembly Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee, New Jersey

Goal: Support proposed ban on the declawing of cats.

The cruel practice of declawing cats could soon be banned in New Jersey, thanks to a bill recently passed by an Assembly Committee. The bill creates an exception for circumstances where declawing is a medical necessity, such as in the case of infection. Should this bill be passed, many cats could be saved from this painful and unnecessary procedure.

Contrary to popular belief, declawing is not a minor procedure. It involves the amputation of part of the cat’s toes at the joint, similar to cutting off the tips of a human’s fingers. Since cats use their toes to walk, declawed cats have to re-learn how to walk and can be left unable to properly exercise their legs, feet, and backs, causing improper posture and possible back problems later in life.

Complications to this procedure can include long-lasting pain and infections inside the claws. Declawed cats are left without their first line of defense in case of abuse or fights with other animals.

While some people may find cats’ clawing a nuisance, it is a natural and important behavior. Alternatives to declawing include trimming of the nails, encouraging the use of scratching posts, or plastic nail caps.

This procedure is completely unnecessary and can cause serious complications. There is no reason to continue declawing cats when so many alternatives are available. Sign the petition below to show your support for the proposed ban on cat declawing.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Andrzejczak,

New Jersey could soon become the first state to ban the declawing of cats. While some think that this is a minor procedure, it actually involves the amputation of bones and ligaments at the joint, similar to cutting off a human’s finger at the first knuckle. The procedure can cause long-lasting pain in the feet and back as well as severe, life-threatening infections.

Several humane alternatives to declawing exist, including the use of scratching posts, trimming the nails, and plastic claw caps. There is no reason for this procedure, which can result in serious pain and other complications. We, the undersigned, praise this new bill and ask that you do everything in your power to ensure that it passes into law.

Sincerely,
