Target: The Honourable Robbie D. Gordon, Regional Senior Judge for the Northeast Region

Goal: Condemn unfairly lax punishment for man who threw cat down stairs and slammed it on the ground.

A man recently convicted of animal cruelty for throwing a cat down a flight of stairs, causing serious injury, has been let off with a slap on the wrist. Adam Stachura pleaded guilty to one count of causing an animal to be in distress for harming a 4-month-old cat. He admitted that he also picked the animal up by the throat and throwing it to the ground. For his crimes, the man will only pay a $500 fine and receive a 10 year ban on animal ownership.

According to a report by the North Bay, Ontario police, who responded to calls of a kitten in distress, the animal was found cowering under a shelf with blood coming from its nose and its mouth. It was transported to a veterinary clinic, where it was found that the animal was having trouble breathing and its heart sounded muffled. Further examinations revealed severe bruising, inflammation and contusions on the kitten’s lungs and abdomen. A later examination found that the cat also had three broken ribs, injuries consistent with trauma.

Ontario has some of the harshest animal cruelty punishments in Canada, with maximum fines of up to $60,000, maximum jail sentences of up to two years, and possible lifetime bans on animal ownership. This deliberate harm to an innocent animal is a shocking crime that must be punished more harshly. Sign the petition below to denounce this judge’s lax stance on animal cruelty, which sends the message that violence against animals is acceptable.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Gordon,

A man recently convicted of throwing a kitten down a flight of stairs has been let off with a $500 fine. Adam Stachura of North Bay, Ontario admitted in court to also picking the cat up by its neck and throwing it onto the ground. With Ontario having some of the best animal welfare laws in Canada, including a maximum $60,000 fine and up to two years in jail, this lax punishment is shocking.

This crime shows complete disregard for the welfare of animals as well as deliberate malice. By treating this crime lightly, the court sends the message that animal cruelty is acceptable. We, the undersigned, denounce the lax punishment against this cruel offender.

Sincerely,

This innocent kitten suffered unnecessarily and horribly. This judge is equally guilty. To the POS abuser: I hope you suffer the same treatment/trauma/pain.

  2. Alice Cheang says:

Animal abusers must be BANNED FROM KEEPING ANIMALS PERMANENTLY AND SERVE JAIL TIME FOR MANY YEARS. This judge is insensitive and void of compassion for animals. What a pathetic judge! He is UNFIT to hold such an important post!
