Applaud Activists’ Rescue of Abused Circus Animals

Target: Animal Defenders International

Goal: Applaud Animal Defenders International’s ongoing work rescuing circus lions from illegal captivity

Picture life in a tiny cage, where your only freedom comes in performing under threat of the whip. You don’t know whether you’ll be fed today, or receive any contact with humans that doesn’t involve mistreatment. This is the reality for many lions, even as more and more countries ban them from circuses. Animal Defenders International has rescued dozens of lions from rogue circuses in Bolivia–and they aren’t about to stop fighting for these majestic beasts.

Jan Creamer and Tim Phillips, co-founders of Animal Defenders International (ADI), continue their work in Columbia and Peru. Governments of these nations are eager for help enforcing recent laws that ban the use of wild animals in circuses. In the United States, ADI is building Congressional support to bring a similar proposal up for vote.

This is a deeply personal mission for the couple. In 1981, Phillips quit his job in finance to focus on animal welfare. Creamer was similarly moved to commit her life to activism after learning more about animal rights abuses. Their two years spent undercover investigating Bolivian circuses led to the rescue of 25 lions–and to an award-winning film, “Lion Ark.”

Animal Defenders International has done more than just save big cats from lives of mistreatment. Its work supports progressive laws that seek to end the mistreatment of all circus animals. Take a moment to thank ADI for its inspiring, ongoing work rescuing lions in illegal captivity.

Dear Animal Defenders International,

Congratulations on the success of your rescue mission in Bolivia freeing illegally captive lions. Thanks to your dedication, these lions now know the freedom of the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado. Their mistreatment at the hands of law-breaking circuses has come to an end.

People all over the world care deeply about the treatment of animals in captivity. And as your film “Lion Ark” continues to garner awards and recognition, awareness of the issue grows. Your work inspires individuals and nations to come together to promote the conservation and welfare of all animals.

I applaud you for continuing to investigate abuses: working with the Peruvian government to enforce a new ban on wild circus animals, and to reintroduce a similar bill in the United States. You have helped protect animals under progressive legislation, showing that enforcement is indeed possible. Thank you for your dedication to animal welfare, and for inspiring yet more nations take action to prevent abuse.

  1. Thank you Animal Defenders International without your help these beautiful creatures would still be enduring a life of abuse and neglect. The USA should be the leaders in banning circus animals instead of still allowing this heinous practice to continue in their country.

  2. Virginia Greenwood-Warner says:

America progressive???? Well not nearly! They still have bear baiting and many many other hideous animal abuses in the name of entertainment!!! Bizarre as they have the education.
