Save the Black-Footed Ferret from Extinction

Target: Jamie Rappaport Clark, President and CEO of the Defenders of Wildlife

Goal: Stop outside forces from hindering the black-footed ferret’s return from the brink of extinction.

The black-footed ferret was once thought to be extinct before they began their slow comeback. Unfortunately, the loss of their habitat and the spread of diseases are not making it easy for these animals. So far, only 300 have been reported alive across North America, far too small a number for a species that nearly died out.

The prairie where the species lived has been turned into farmland or property on which to build houses, in addition to robbing them of their main food sources. Furthermore, ferrets are fragile animals who are susceptible to all manner of illness and disease; in addition to their naturally short life spans, this does not bode well for their longevity as a species.

It is heartbreaking enough when a species goes extinct or is in danger of going extinct, but it is worse when a species tries to rebuild its numbers and humanity stands in the way. We must stop the spread of the diseases that kill the black-footed ferret and take greater strides to protect their natural habitat. These animals deserve a second chance at life to spread their numbers throughout the rest of the world. Sign this petition to demand stronger protections for the black-footed ferret.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Clark,

The black-footed ferret has been trying slowly but surely to come back from the brink of extinction after having been thought completely gone for years, but humanity is not making it easy. Their homes have been taken away by the farming industry, and they die of diseases that spread through the colonies. Not helping this is the fact that ferrets are fragile animals with poor longevity, which is posing even more danger to them as a species.

Please implement and enforce stronger protection laws for these animals. The black-footed ferret works so hard to preserve its species, we must not let its efforts be for naught. Please help us save the black-footed ferret from going permanently extinct.

Sincerely,

  1. Defenders of Wildlife are an advocacy group for animals and the environment, and do not themselves make the laws that protect species, and I already sign many of their petitions
