Target: Theresa May, Prime Minister of Great Britain
Goal: Ensure BP pays environmental reparations for a recent 700 barrel oil spill in the North Sea.
Around 95 tonnes of oil have been leaked into the North Sea after a technical issue on a BP oil platform, the company says. Production was halted when the issue was discovered, but not before nearly 700 barrels of oil could leak into the surrounding water. Experts watching the spill from a plane say that itappears to be moving away from land. BP is reportedly going to make no attempt to clean the spill, instead allowing it to naturally disperse into the sea.
According to animal conservation society RSPB Scotland, several sensitive species of seabird could have been put at risk by this spill. The organization is urging BP and maritime agencies to disclose valuable information about the spill, including the type of oil spilled. Without this information, the organization will not know how to best help seabirds that may be affected by the spill.
Spilled oil can cause birds’ feathers to mat, impeding waterproofing and exposing birds’ skin to the elements. This can result in hypothermia and other life-threatening conditions. When birds try to preen their oil-soaked feathers, the pollutants can enter their digestive systems and poison them. Furthermore, oil spills can pollute food sources for extended periods of time.
Oil spills are incredible damaging to the natural environment, including the plants and wildlife that rely on it. In order to ensure that oil giants are more careful about safety, it is imperative that they are properly fined for their spills. Sign the petition below to demand that BP is made to pay environmental reparations, including paying for the treatment of any seabirds that may require care.
Dear Mrs. May,
About 95 tonnes of oil were recently spilled into the North Sea by a BP platform. The company blames “technical issues” for the spill and so far has no plans to attempt to clean the spill. Instead, the company plans to let the oil disperse naturally at sea. BP has still has not released essential information about the type of oil spilled to conservation organizations such as RSPB Scotland.
This oil will cause damage to the surrounding ecosystem and the birds, fish, and plants that rely on it. Therefore, BP must be made to pay for reparations to the landscape. We, the undersigned, demand that the oil giant is fined for this lack of safety in its rigs.
