Commend Ban on Wild Animals in Circuses

Target: Dr. George Abela, President of Malta

Goal: Commend efforts to protect wild and endangered animals from abuse in circuses.

Recently, the Southern European island country of Malta drafted a regulation to ban wild animals from circuses. The ban encompasses everything from obtaining and training animals to using animals in advertising for the circuses. This is a huge leap in the right direction for saving wild and endangered animals from being used for entertainment. The government of Malta has thoughtfully and intelligently crafted a way for animals to be free from enslavement.

This extensive ban ensures that all aspects of circus cruelty are monitored and regulated. The regulation was sought by hundreds of protesters in the country who have been fighting against the use of wild animals in circuses. Wild animals are defined in the ban as any animal that is not normally domesticated in Malta. Animals that were involved in a circus before the ban, or those that are found performing illegally will be rehabilitated and relocated at the owner’s expense.

Any circus owner who is found illegally advertising, obtaining, training or forcing animals to perform will face up to a year in prison, a hefty fine and will have his or her circus shut down. Their permits will also be revoked, making it hard for them to continue in the circus business. The Malta Government has shown support for wild animals; commend the Malta Government for their stance on animal welfare.

Dear Dr. George Abela, President of Malta,

Recently your country passed a ban on the use of wild animals in circuses. The ban includes obtaining, training, advertising for and performances by wild animals. This ban is a very important step for wild and endangered animals; thank you for your dedication to the welfare of abused animals.

The ban also includes some very important details that may have been overlooked had they not been mentioned. Wild animals that are currently being forced to perform are to be rehabilitated and relocated at the owner’s expense; this will ensure that abused circus animals will live out the rest of their lives peacefully, rather than suffer a terrible fate. Any circus owner that is caught with performing wild animals, or training wild animals to perform, will be served up to a year in prison, along with a hefty fine and the closure of his or her circus.

It is clear that wild animal welfare is important to you and your country. Your efforts are noticed and appreciated.
