Stop Exploiting Chimpanzees for Greeting Cards

Target: Donald J. Hall Jr., CEO of Hallmark Cards

Goal: Stop Hallmark from selling cards that feature captive chimpanzees.

Chimpanzees are incredibly smart and fascinating animals, but unfortunately this makes them very valuable in the entertainment industry. The Missouri Primate Foundation, also known as Chimparty, breeds chimpanzees for the entertainment industry and these animals are forced to do tricks for pictures or shows.

Hallmark uses chimpanzees from this company for many of its greeting cards. For the cards, the chimps are forced to “smile,” make funny faces, or are put into ridiculous costumes. Many of these chimps are trained using pain and fear tactics.

Sign this petition and demand Hallmark stop exploiting chimps and no longer sell cards that use chimpanzees imprisioned in the entertainment industry.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Hall,

Many of your greeting cards feature chimpanzees making distorted faces or wearing ridiculous costumes. The chimps used in these cards come from the Missouri Primate Foundation which has been cited multiple times by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for keeping the animals in too small of cages, not cleaning the facilities or providing enough enrichment for the animals.

Chimpanzees are incredibly intelligent, curious and social animals. In the entertainment industry, these extraordinary animals are often trained using pain and fear tactics, and when they are not “working” they are stuck in cages. It is a sad and unfair life.

Please consider ending the sale of cards that feature captive chimpanzees. These animals belong in the wild, playing with friends and enjoying the sunshine. This cruel company should not be supported any longer.

Sincerely,

  1. Of COURSE Hallmark is involved in the exploitation of animals, just for money! I NEVER buy or use products where there’s even a CHANCE that animals have been exploited, because I’m not a brainless twit! This also includes E-cards (free or not) where animals are exploited, as I will not knowingly PROMOTE such heartless companies or the jerks who own or run them. People have to start THINKING HARDER about their purchases and who they’re mindlessly harming!

    DEMAND ALL COUNTERACTING PERSONS TO  START     TO     P A Y     R E P A R A T I O N    TO     FUTURE    GENERATIONS, ALL OF THESE GREED AND IGNORANT SCUM!

  4. Hallmark has not created any new chimpanzee photography in nearly a decade. Since then any new card featuring a chimpanzee has been illustrated or pulled from our existing photo library of licensed or sourced images. Hallmark’s products and cards featuring animals are intended to celebrate the love, humor and happiness that they bring into our lives. Primates are featured on less than 50 of the more than 30,000 cards we offer.

  5. It has come to my attention that Hallmark is offering greeting cards with great apes on them. Are you aware of what these animals must endure simply for your business? Chimps used for entertainment purposes are treated ruthlessly. To begin with, babies are stolen from their mothers oftentimes before they have been weaned. They are then trained to smile for the camera and physical abused when they do not. I am asking that you please put a policy in place to stop using great apes on Hallmark cards. Thank you for helping to stop this abusive industry.
