Target: Harry Reid, U.S. Senate Minority Leader
Goal: Criticize senator for blocking legislation that would make it federally illegal to brutally abuse any animal.
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has blocked the Prevent Animal Cruelty and Torture Act (PACT), which would make it federally illegal to engage in a form of animal abuse known as “crushing.” Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) requested unanimous consent since the legislation was not controversial and the majority of Democrats and Republicans had already shown favor for its passing. The bill was also endorsed by the Humane Society and the National Sheriff’s Association. Unanimous consent is typically used in such cases and allows dire legislation such as this to progress through the process quicker.
Currently, only videos and pictures of “crushing” are illegal, meaning federal prosecutors cannot bring the abusers themselves to justice without passing this legislation. This heinous form of animal abuse that some deranged individuals engage in includes burning, mutilating, suffocating, and sexually abusing animals. Often, the targets are household pets that are bought or traded on the internet, and often the abuser makes money off the photos. It is a shame that legislation to prosecute this crime does not already exist, yet while this is the first law that would protect all animals, Reid seems to have his own agenda.
During the vote to pass the PACT, Reid said he did not want to vote on a bill that has not received a hearing until there is a hearing for Judge Merrick Garland to fill the empty Supreme Court Justice seat. Reid brings up an important issue, but it does not mean animal abusers should be allowed to walk free. The PACT would charge these acts to a felony, which would come with fines and up to seven years in prison. Unfortunately, Reid’s partisan agenda and apparent joy in wielding his power will likely cost many innocent animals their lives. Denounce Reid for his grave mistake in blocking this important legislation and allowing animal abusers to evade justice.
Dear Senator Reid,
Your recent decision to block the Prevention of Animal Cruelty and Torture Act (PACT) is abominable. Due to your personal, partisan agenda, you have decided to allow crimes against animals to continue unpunished. Burning, suffocating, sexually abusing, or any other kind of animal torture should already be illegal under federal law, and we are ashamed that you would do anything to prevent such a worthy bill.
It is not often that Republicans and Democrats can agree. In the case of the PACT, though, nearly everyone was on board and knew that this was important legislation. Organizations like the Humane Society and the National Sheriff’s Association were also in favor of this bill. No one thinks you are a hero for sacrificing abused animals just to make a political point. There are bigger things in this world, and protecting innocent animals is our responsibility as a people and a nation. We, the undersigned, condemn your behavior in blocking this bill, which would have made it punishable under federal law to brutally abuse any animal.
