Support Positive Steps to Protect Animals

Target: Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville and Senator Arlan B. Meekhof

Goal: End the use of gas chambers in animal shelters, require breeders to register with the state, and ban animal abusers from owning animals.

Several critical animal protection bills are up for consideration in Michigan, which if passed would make a great difference to the health and protection of animals in that state. S.B. 354 would ban the use of gas chambers as a method of euthanasia in all animal shelters throughout Michigan. Gas chambers are a cruel method of euthanasia that causes great panic, struggle, pain and suffering for defenseless animals that are not adopted at shelters. Demand that gas chambers be banned throughout the entire state, requiring shelters to use the more humane method of euthanasia that is readily available.

S.B. 560 is another bill that would require dog breeders with more than 15 females to register with the state, and would also improve guidelines for breeders, requiring them to provide their animals with necessary vaccinations and to treat them for parasites. Though it is generally better to adopt from a shelter than to support dog breeders, it is important to provide strict guidelines for breeders in order to protect the innocent animals they foster and sell, and hopefully to eliminate the presence of breeders that are not caring for their animals the way they should. Ask Michigan Senators to place stricter guidelines upon breeders.

S.B. 386 would protect animals from the hands of an animal-abuser. It would ban individuals with prior animal cruelty charges from owning animals, and would also prevent abused animals from being returned to their abusive owner. S.B. 603/604/605 and H.B. 5061/5062/5063 would require prosecutors to report any animal abuse charges to a state registry of animal abusers, a measure that would protect animals from further abuse and hopefully deter individuals from abusing in the first place. Adoption agencies would be able to access this state registry as part of the adoption process.

Support these important changes to Michigan law to protect the animals in this state, and set an example for other states to follow.

Dear Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville and Senator Arlan B. Meekhof,

There are several very important bills being discussed at the state level that would make an immense positive impact on animals in Michigan. These laws would ban all gas chambers in Michigan shelters, requiring them to use a more humane method of euthanasia. They would also protect animals in breeder situations, requiring breeders with 15 or more females to register with the state, and requiring breeders to follow stricter guidelines such as vaccinating their animals and providing them with parasite treatment.

There would also be life-saving measures taken concerning animal abuse and neglect, with all individuals charged with abuse or neglect being placed on a registry that is visible to shelter employees and volunteers, preventing these cruel individuals from owning and abusing animals again. It would also prevent animal-abusers from being reunited with their pets. Please push through S.B. 354, S.B. 560, S.B. 386, S.B. 603/604/605 and H.B. 5061/5062/5063 to protect Michigan animals.
