Praise Launch of Mobile Spay and Neuter Clinic

Target: Mike Laviotte, Chair, Ottawa Humane Society

Goal: Applaud new initiative to provide free sterilization services to low income pet owners.

A mobile spay and neuter clinic will be sterilizing animals in low income areas in a bid to control the growing population of unwanted cats. The Ottawa Humane Society is responsible for the clinic, one of the first of its kind in Canada, which will be operated solely by donations. The clinic is expected to sterilize 6,000 cats in the first two years after launch.

Overpopulation of cats in shelters has been an issue in Canada and throughout much of the world for decades. Cats are generally adopted at a lower rate than dogs, and there are also more cats taken into shelters than dogs, according to the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies. This overpopulation is so bad that an estimated half of all cats that go into shelters are euthanized.

By providing free sterilizations to low income pet owners, the Ottawa Humane Society will ensure that everyone has a chance to sterilize their animals. This will mean fewer cats languishing in overcrowded shelters, and ultimately, fewer cats put to death simply because there is no space for them.

This project will ensure that more people have access to sterilization procedures for their pets. Paired with an information campaign about the importance of spaying and neutering, thousands of animals will be saved from unnecessary death. Sign the petition below to praise this new initiative.

Dear Mr. Laviotte,

The Ottawa Humane Society has announced the upcoming launch of a new mobile spay and neuter unit. This unit will be one of the first of its kind in Canada and will provide low income people with a chance to sterilize their cats. Sterilization will help with the widespread overpopulation of cats in shelters that has been an issue for decades now. The problem is currently so bad that half of all cats that go into shelters are euthanized.

This new initiative could save thousands of animals from being stuck in a shelter or euthanized. This, paired with education on the importance of spaying an neutering, could make a real dent in the issue of overpopulation. We, the undersigned, applaud your work to bring sterilizations to all cats throughout Ottawa.
