Don’t Let Convicted Animal Abuser Work With Animals Again

Rescue Dog

Target:  Dannel Malloy, Governor of Connecticut and Denise Markle, Connecticut Judge

Goal: Stop man with history of dog abuse convictions from working with animals, and pass stricter animal shelter laws.

An employee of the SPCA of Connecticut, which has no affiliation with the national organization, has been charged time and again with animal cruelty for overcrowding dogs. Connecticut animal shelter laws are not strict enough and the judicial system has allowed Fred Acker to get away with this alleged abuse. In 2012, after a facility in Bethlehem was zoned for just 29 dogs, he reportedly bought 100 small dogs from California which he adopted out for $400 each. He is alleged to have rented extra space in area towns like Milford where the dogs would sometimes go unattended for 24 hours and often fight, resulting in illness and injury. Animals which were once seized from Acker are now back with him because he sued Bethlehem Animal Control, and he is still working for the SPCA of Connecticut.

Acker has escaped prison time for similar allegations in the past by seeming like a remorseful man, yet he reportedly continues to abuse the animals he claims to love. Suspicions that he uses these animals for profit is increased by the fact that he doesn’t keep financial records for the animals that come through his doors.

Republican leader of the State House of Representatives, Themis Klarides, is calling for stricter animal shelter laws in Connecticut due to the way Acker is allowed to run these facilities. After learning that all the cats at the Monroe location had respiratory infections, she uncovered the litigation against Acker and has decided to write a new law that protects animals in shelters from this kind of abuse. Under the current legislation, shelters are only obligated to supply the minimum amount of care (i.e. food, water, medical care as needed, ect…). Demand that Acker not be allowed to work with animals and animal shelters ever again and that animals shelter laws be made stricter.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Malloy and Judge Markle,

Fred Acker has proven himself apparently incapable of working with animals. Evidence of his most recent alleged abuses have emerged across Connecticut towns like Milford, Monroe, and Bethlehem, and he has been convicted in the past on at least a dozen cases of animal cruelty. Acker continues to work with these animals and for the SPCA of Connecticut as the charges against him have not yet been settled. Many believe Acker has been able to get away with his abuse because the animal shelter laws are too lax in Connecticut.

The case is being reviewed and Judge Markle will make a decision on Tuesday, September 13. We are asking you to please do justice by these poor animals and not allow them to be subjected to Acker any longer. Additionally, Themis Klarides has called for stricter animal shelter laws, and we ask that you stand with her to make Connecticut a safer place for pets in shelters.

Sincerely,

  1. If the law enforcers ignore animal cruelty then they are as guilty & cruel as the abusers themselves.

  3. RENEE HOWARD says:

An obvious purveyor of puppy and kitty abuse…just the fact that he skirts the ends if the laws and is allowed to continue proves he knows he is breaking laws..if for any reason even one innocent animal shows stress or sickness and is attached to u…game over..do not pass go..do not collect 100.00…and definitly his state should not be helping him by giving animals back that show obvious neglect and abuse..those officals as well should b fined for dereliction of duty..if not for out and out stupidity…

  4. why is he allowed to be near an animal never mind work with them or be anywhere near them what’s the matter with the spca down there are they nuts or do they even care about animals if they keep him around animals and he’s not charged then they are worse than him they should all be charged and he should be locked up for a long time
