Justice for Tortoise Set on Fire in Live Social Media Video

Target: Douglas A. Valeska, Houston County District Attorney

Goal: Demand that the maximum penalty be set for the teenager who reportedly set a tortoise on fire to increase Facebook views.

A tortoise was set on fire allegedly to garner Facebook views. A live video feed showed an Alabama teenager dousing the tortoise in alcohol and setting it on fire. Demand that the maximum penalty be set in this case.

James Terrence Allen, 19, reportedly stated, “give me 100 views and I’ll light it” shortly before dousing the tortoise in alcohol and setting it ablaze. He then reportedly threatened, “give me 200 views or this (expletive) is gonna die.” The gopher tortoise, known as Leonardo, fortunately suffered only minor injuries.

Allen has been charged with aggravated animal cruelty. Leonardo is recuperating at the Big Bend Wildlife Sanctuary in Enterprise and will be released back into the wild once he recovers. Sign below and demand that the maximum penalty be set for this cruel case.

Dear District Attorney Valeska,

A tortoise suffered minor injuries after a teenager reportedly set him on fire. The crime was documented in a live Facebook video. We demand that you seek the maximum penalty in this case.

Leonardo, a gopher tortoise, endured tremendous suffering after he was set on fire. The live video reportedly documented James Terrence Allen asking for more views and threatening to kill the tortoise if he did not receive them.

Allen faces a felony animal cruelty charge as well as a misdemeanor charge from the Alabama Game Wardens, as the gopher tortoise is a threatened species. Take a stand against animal abuse and recommend the maximum penalty in this case.
