Save Critically Endangered Eastern Gorilla From Extinction

Target: Erik Solheim, United Nations Environment Programme Executive Director

Goal: Enact stronger protections to save the eastern gorilla from extinction.

The eastern gorilla, the world’s largest living primate, is in imminent danger of being wiped off the face of the earth. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) recently listed the species as “critically endangered.”

This troubling news continues a dangerous trend for the world’s great ape population. Of the planet’s six great ape species, four are now considered to be critically endangered.  The IUCN mentioned habitat loss and illegal hunting as the primary reasons for the gorilla’s status change. “To see the eastern gorilla — one of our closest cousins — slide toward extinction is truly distressing,” said Inger Andersen, the organization’s director general.

According to recent estimates, there are approximately 5,000 eastern gorillas remaining in the wild, a number that represents a 70 percent decline from the 1990’s. If unchecked, this massive decline will soon permanently eliminate this species. Sign the petition below and demand that stronger protections for these valuable animals be put in place before it is too late.

Dear Mr. Solheim,

I am writing to call your attention to the plight of the eastern gorilla. This species was just recently listed as “critically endangered,” meaning it is only one step away from extinction. Due to illegal poaching and extensive habitat loss, there are now only 5,000 gorillas remaining in the wild, which represents a 70 percent decline over the past 20 years.

Fortunately, it is not too late to save these animals. Conservation efforts have saved several other species from the brink of extinction, and they can do the same for the eastern gorilla. I urge you to enact stronger protections to save these creatures from violent hunters and senseless deforestation.

It’s truly sickening how many species are nearly extinct and because of humans. Humans can stop these man-made extinctions but seem to wait until it’s too late before really doing something about it. Imagine a world that consists almost solely of the most vile, violent, and greedy species–man. How dreary and ugly that world will be.

    • Sergei Kamenev says:

That world (populated mostly by humans) can become a reality much sooner than many think (if they think at all), and considering the depraved and perverse inclinations of many humans, they will probably be fighting each other over whatever few resources will be left, until the whole ‘homo sapiens’ species goes down. Unfortunately, a lot of nonhuman inhabitants of the Earth will be obliterated for nothing before that.

Hopefully we will exit with our cousins too when the right time will come up! God luck nature and hurry up with that progress…I can’t wait…
