Cancel Cruel Elephant Rides at Theme Park

Target: Don McCoy, Park President of Six Flags Discovery Kingdom

Goal: Permanently cancel theme park attraction that features cruel elephant rides.

A theme park continues to “rent” elephants to be ridden by guests after it finally retired its two resident elephants to a sanctuary following years of protests from concerned activists. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom features an assortment of wildlife with which guests can interact, such as elephants, dolphins, giraffes, and seals. While amusing to guests, these features are often not so great for these animals, who must endure unnatural and often unfulfilling lives in captivity.

Much to the chagrin of animal advocates everywhere, Discovery Kingdom hosts the company Have Trunk Will Travel, Inc. Have Trunk, which loans out elephants to fairs, parks, and other establishments, has reportedly been caught abusing their elephants with bullhooks and electric prods.

These cruel, sadistic methods are allegedly used to force the elephants to perform completely unnatural behaviors, such as headstands. No reputable group or individual would ever dare to associate themselves with Have Trunk, making Discovery Kingdom’s continued use of their services all the more disappointing.

Elephants are noble, intelligent, sensitive animals who often suffer greatly in captivity, particularly when they’re used for so-called entertainment. Any rides hosted by Have Trunk Will Travel, Inc. are inherently cruel and must not be tolerated. Demand that Six Flags Discovery Kingdom cut ties with this business immediately and promise to never promote elephant rides again.

Dear Mr. McCoy,

I am profoundly disappointed by Six Flags Discovery Kingdom’s continued business with Have Trunk Will Travel, Inc. In order to train their elephants for rides like the ones provided at your park, Have Trunk’s employees savagely punish these sensitive animals with electric prods and bullhooks, according to reports. Proving just how little this company cares for their animals, its owners have repeatedly spoken out against legislation that aims to protect elephants, such as proposed bans on cruel instruments like the bullhook.

Elephants are known for being highly intelligent and social animals, making their barbaric treatment in the entertainment industry all the more abhorrent. They deserve so much better than to live miserable lives in captivity and to be used for our entertainment. By continuing to use Have Trunk Will Travel, Inc.’s services, Discovery Kingdom is endorsing animal cruelty. I find that absolutely unacceptable and will not patronize your park until its elephant rides are permanently canceled.

I urge you to cancel Discovery Kingdom’s contract with Have Trunk as soon as possible and vow to never again host elephant rides or any similar attraction. Only then can you begin to show the public that animal welfare is more important than our entertainment at animals’ expense.

This report is truly shocking! No wild animal should ever be treated with such disrespect. Wild animals are not born into this world to be abused by man for either profit or entertainment! Discovery Kingdom’s contract must be cancelled IMMEDIATELY and the helpless elephants rescued and rehomed to a reputable sanctuary where they can be professionally loved and cared for NOT used for profit by Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, who are obviously profiteering from subjecting these elephants to unacceptable cruelty. Prosecute Have Trunk Will Travel for their despicable abuse to this majestic animals. Hit them where it hurts – their pockets!
