Stop Shooting and Killing Black Bears

Target: Mark McKee, Mayor of Revelstoke, Canada, and Revelstoke City Council Members

Goal: Safely deter black bears from wandering too close to human habitats, instead of killing them.

Nine black bears were shot because they wandered too close to people, yet this sad scenario could have likely been avoided if citizens would have left less garbage and other things that attract the animals outside. We need to take action in order to ensure that such a tragedy is prevented in the future.

Conservation officer Dan Bartol expressed his dismay about having to shoot a bear that walked too close to a toddler and further went on to explain that most citizens in Revelstoke, Canada do not have bear-proof trash cans. He then explained that fruit trees owned by people in the area provided the bears with an easy food source.

If government officials and citizens work together to implement bear deterrents, either less or no other bears will likely have to be killed for endangering the lives of people. Urge officials to provide citizens with bear-proof trash cans to limit the amount of fruit trees citizens are allowed to have and to educate citizens as to why taking such steps is important in an effort to save as many bears as possible.

Dear Mayor McKee,

Recently, nine black bears were killed because they walked too close to areas where humans dwell. Unfortunately, taking such drastic measures could have potentially been avoided if deterrents had been put in place to keep the animals away. It is important that such steps are taken in the future in order to ensure that many bears will be saved.

A conservation officer named Dan Bartol was disheartened when he had to help shoot the bears. He explained that because a majority of citizens do not have bear-proof trash cans, bears are often attracted to the area. Bartol also explained that bears usually wander onto peoples’ properties in order to eat the fruit off of their trees.

If citizens were provided with bear-proof trash cans, were limited to the amount of fruit trees that they were allowed to grow in their yards and were further educated as to why taking such steps was crucial, there is a good chance that shooting these beautiful animals could be avoided in the future. I therefore urge you to take the above steps in order to ensure that black bears will be able to thrive.

  1. NO!!! It’s false!!! THe human beings are too close of the wild bears and not the contrary!!! Mankind is destroying the earth. And the animals die because they don’t have place enough for them. And very soon, the same event will be true for us!! Poor world, poor humanity!!! Very soon, the last and final explosion will destroy the earth!!
