Demand National Mall Stop Killing Fish

bonytail chub or bonytail Gila elegans cyprinid freshwater fish

Target: Jonathan Jarvis, Director of National Park Service

Goal: Do not refill Constitution Gardens pond with fish after heat wave killed thousands.

A heat wave struck Washington D.C., resulting in the deaths of thousands of fish. These fish lived in the Constitution Gardens pond at the National Mall.

Due to the shallow depth and illogical layout, the pond is not suitable to sustain life, especially during heat waves. Thousands of fish died back in 2013 after another heat wave hit D.C. It is illogical and irresponsible to continue to fill the pond with fish when the inevitable deaths will eventually recur.

Fish are smart and unique animals that form relationships and show affection toward each other. Sign this petition to demand the National Mall spare thousands of lives by not restocking the Constitution Gardens pond.

Dear Mr. Jarvis,

Recently, a heat wave struck Washington D.C., and as a result thousands of fish died in the Constitution Gardens pond at the National Mall. Back in 2013, thousands of fish were also killed due to a heat wave. It is clear that this pond is not built to sustain life.

The shallow depth of the pond makes it impossible to sustain life at such high temperatures. Heat waves are inevitable and by restocking the pond, you are promising thousands of fish certain death.

Please do not restock the pond with more fish. Doing so is irresponsible, illogical and cruel.

  1. And with climate change, more heat waves potentially on the horizon…

  2. Cynthia Mattera says:

PLEASE, do the right thing. NO MORE FISH in the pond at the National Mall. Its not deep enough for the fish to take refuge in, when the temps are extremely cold or hot.

  3. Or else redesign the fish tank to properly hold the numbers of fish in it…….fish (tropical type of fish) can live happily in a large enough tank with proper care……

  4. Kae Blecha, OTR says:

They keep refilling the (unsuitable) pond and the fish keep dying. Isn’t that the definition of insanity?

  5. Unless you redesign the Gardens, allowing for more shade, better filtration,
oxygenation of the water and some way to cool waters which is really impossible and too expensive.

This is total waste of taxpayer’s money to say nothing about the cruelty.
    Do not restock the Gardens.

  6. Yolanda Bernhard says:

the hell is everywhere where the innocent and defenseless animals tortured, tormented and murdered.
the HUMAN is for these poor animals HELL
Close to this accursed hell – final and immediately
    let the animals LIFE
