Target: Jacob Zuma, President of South Africa
Goal: Rehome animals that zoo allegedly stresses out by allowing people to pet them and shut down facility.
A zoo is allegedly stressing out baby lions by allowing people to pet them. Sadly, lions in this situation are oftentimes sold to canned hunting facilities when they are older so that hunters can pay to shoot them inside an enclosed area. Even if the lions are not sold to such hunting facilities, they are usually still tormented as cubs since they are ripped away from their mothers at a very young age.
Despite this being the case, many people were hopeful that the lions would finally start getting the respect they deserve when Lion and Safari Park promised to stop letting people pet them. However, pictures of people doing just that have recently surfaced online. Additionally, the park is reportedly allowing people to also interact with lions at another one of their new parks.
Tell officials that this needs to stop and that these animals need to be placed in a reputable facility where they will be able to live out the remainder of their days in peace. These lions deserve better.
Dear President Zuma,
A zoo that promised to no longer allow people to pet lions is allegedly allowing visitors to spend great amounts of time with them. The lions are oftentimes sold to canned hunting facilities when they are older and likely do not run from hunters when they are approached, as they may not realize from past experiences that the people in the area are there to harm them. Even if the lions are not sold to hunting ranches, cubs that zoos allow people to pet are usually torn apart from their mothers at a much too early age. Cubs—in turn—are thought by experts to suffer a great amount of stress as a result.
When Lion and Safari Park promised to stop allowing human and cub interactions, many people thought that lions might finally start receiving better treatment from their human caretakers. Yet, instead of keeping their word, they are reportedly also letting people heavily interact with lions at another one of their newer locations.
It is absolutely disgusting that this zoo is allowed to remain open at the expense of these beautiful animals. I therefore urge you to do everything in your power to ensure that this zoo and all others like it are shut down and to further ensure that these lions are rescued and placed in a reputable sanctuary where they will not be forced to interact with people. This type of animal abuse should never be tolerated.
