Stop Keeping Live Bears As Tourist Props

Target: Lefter Koka, Head of Ministry of Environment in Albania

Goal: Stop the cruel caging of bears across Albania as tourist attractions and photo props.

There are roughly 50 bears caged up on various street corners or popular tourist attractions in scattered locations across Albania. Their purpose there is to look exotic, wild, and fascinating enough for tourists to gawk at or take pictures with. These bears live in completely cruel conditions and may never see life outside of their cages, unless we step in to do something.

Just about all of the bears in captivity right now began their lives roaming the wild in their natural habitat but were then taken out of the wild and forced to live their lives in cages to serve the Albanian government. Thankfully, however, an organization called FOUR PAWS is working in coordination with the Ministry of Environment in Albania to try and relocate these bears back into a more familiar and healthy environment. Demand that the Ministry of Environment stop caging bears and transfer them to a wildlife sanctuary so they can live their lives out in peace.

Dear Lefter Koka,

Currently, there are around 50 bears that are living in cages all across Albania whose only purpose is to pose for photos and look exotic for the tourists of the area. These bears have been taken from their homes in the wild and forced to be a prop for the Albanian government in an effort to boost tourism. Having these beautiful wild animals living in such horrendous conditions is absolutely unacceptable and something needs to be done immediately.

Many animal activists consider these bears “The Saddest Bears” because of the completely cruel and inhumane conditions they live in. You know that it’s bad when these animals are collectively known as “The Saddest” bears–that truly speaks volumes about the conditions they are forced to endure.

Considering the fact that Albania is applying for E.U. membership and is trying to join the community of international tourism, the country should set a positive example for the rest of the world by showing that a true E.U. nation does not condone such abusive treatment of animals. It’s time for the Albanian government, particularly the Ministry of Environment, to step up and take action to end the unfair capturing and showcasing of wild brown bears.
