Save Suffering Animals from Neglectful Zoo

Target: Joseph Stanzione, Greene County District Attorney

Goal: Shut down zoo where wounded animals live in cramped and feces-filled cages, and send them to accredited sanctuaries.

Animals suffering from open wounds and confined to cramped cages deserve to be released to a suitable sanctuary. The residents of the Bailiwick Ranch and Animal Park, a zoo in Catskill, New York, are suffering physically and mentally from reportedly being kept in cramped cages and deteriorating enclosures and being given improper veterinary care. Reporters from Times Union found animals with open wounds in rusty and feces-filled enclosures.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has already penalized this zoo twice for animal welfare violations, but this is not enough. In July, the USDA fined Bailiwick $1,350 for failures “to maintain housing facilities in good repair to protect the animals from injury.” Yet, conditions have reportedly not changed and it seems as though no efforts are being made by management to ensure the animals’ safety. This facility must therefore be shut down to stop these innocent animals’ suffering.

Sign this petition urging local officials to take measures to protect animals by shutting this zoo and sending its residents to accredited sanctuaries where they may recover from this poor treatment.

Dear Mr. Stanzione,

Animals are reportedly suffering from open wounds and being kept in flimsy, cramped and feces-filled cages at the Bailiwick Ranch and Animal Park in Catskill. Times Union reporters and locals have revealed the lack of care given to this zoo’s animals, and the filthy conditions they are being subjected to. The USDA recently fined this zoo and has penalized it once again for animal welfare violations. Clearly this is not enough and conditions are not getting any better for animals trapped in this facility.

Please do everything in your power to ensure this zoo is immediately shut down and its resident animals sent to accredited sanctuaries where they can begin to recover and receive the care and conditions they deserve.

  1. Don’t you think you should do your research before doing something like this? Have you ever been there before? Your going to take a reporters opinion? Who most likely does not have any animal experience. All of the current inspections have been 100% in compliance, did you bother to get their side of the story? Did you know more then 90% of the animals there are rescues? This is a family run operation who puts their heart into everything. They don’t get any help from anyone. Instead of this why not try to see what you can do to help after learning the facts.

    • Jette Guyette says:

Nice to know they put their hearts into cruelly murdering the animals in their care. Murder is murder! Animals feel pain, just like humans do. Animals fear, and animals want to be with their families just like we do. The murdering of animals has to stop because it desensitizes our society. We kill and look away. In your case you are defending murder, and that will diminish your soul.

    • Dawn Casteel-Lorick says:

I HAVE been to this place and found the animals neglected, despondent, ignored and used as money props.
I guess it all depends on your definition of what constitutes humane and loving care.
This place definitely does not care for the lives of these sentient beings, disgraceful.

    • Margaret Melnick says:

Carolyn I take it you are one of the family. I haven’t been there but have heard enough about this place and others like it to last me a life time. So 90 % of the animals were rescues meaning they were neglected and abused before does this mean it is ok for this kind of treatment to continue? Not in my books. If they are unable to care for these animals why start it other than to try to make money off the poor animals. Do you deny these animals suffer injury without medical attention? I would look for their side of the story if the animals could give theirs. A reports opinion no but a reports picture yes.

  2. Rhona LaBruzzo says:

Yep, the USDA is again not doing their job. What a joke. I hope they are all without families because they clearly can’t see what they are doing.

  3. Alice Cheang says:

Please release these neglected animals to responsible caring sanctuaries if you truly have their welfare at heart. They are innocent and don’t deserve to suffer.
