Target: Andrew S. Robinson, Lewiston District Attorney
Goal: Condemn lax sentence for woman who left her dog outside in the cold to die.
A woman who abandoned her dog, leading to its death, has been handed down a $500 fine and a 90-day suspended sentence, meaning she will not serve any jail time. Sarah Vye, a 22-year-old Maine resident, pleaded guilty to animal cruelty in relation to the case. This lax sentence was handed down despite police advocating for the maximum punishment possible under the law, which would have been 264 days in jail and a $2,000 fine.
According to the investigation, Vye abandoned the dog outside of an animal shelter while it was closed. She did not make any effort to secure the dog with a crate or a leash, leaving it to wander in freezing temperatures. The yellow Labrador was found dead on the side of the road three days later after being hit by a car. After calling in to a local radio station, she called herself an “animal lover,” but said she could no longer take care of the dog.
A pet is a long-term responsibility that must only be taken on by dedicated and caring people. This insufficient sentence sends the message that abandoning pets in the freezing cold to die is an acceptable thing to do. While Vye will no longer be able to harm animals as she has received a lifetime ban on animal ownership, this sentence does nothing to deter future offenders. Sign the petition below to denounce this sentence, which devalues the lives of innocent animals.
Dear Mr. Robinson,
Sarah Vye, who recently pleaded guilty to animal cruelty for abandoning her dog in the freezing cold, will face no jail time for her crime. Vye was seen on security cameras abandoning her dog in front of an animal shelter after-hours, not even bothering to crate it or leash it. The dog was found dead three days later, run over by a car.
Pets rely on their owners to provide the food, shelter, and care necessary to ensure their survival. This lax punishment sends the message that it is acceptable to abandon pets when they are no longer convenient to own, doing nothing to deter future offenders. We, the undersigned, condemn this unjust sentence, which places no value on the lives of innocent animals.
