Target: U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid
Goal: Provide protection to monarch butterflies under the Endangered Species Act
With their population in rapid decline, monarch butterflies have lost over 165 million acres of habitat. Herbicides, pesticides, the loss of the milkweed plant, and illegal logging in Mexico have contributed to the massive reduction in monarch butterfly populations. The U.S. government needs to protect the monarch butterflies under the Endangered Species Act before it is too late to save them.
Butterfly monarch populations have declined by 90 percent in less than twenty years. During the 1990s, roughly one billion monarch butterflies migrated to fir forests in the winter. Scientists estimate that only 33 million monarch butterflies remain today.
The increased use of herbicides and pesticides on genetically modified crops is a leading factor in the loss of monarch butterflies. Extreme temperatures, such as droughts or severe storms, add to the destruction the milkweed plant. Milkweed is the only plant that monarch butterflies will lay their eggs on, but it is steadily disappearing as well.
By signing the petition below you will urge U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, to reverse this critical decline in the monarch butterfly population by protecting them under the Endangered Species Act.
Dear Senator Harry Reid,
The monarch butterfly is at risk of becoming extinct due to manmade intervention. By increasing the use of herbicides and pesticides during the last twenty years, we have destroyed 90 percent of their population. Illegal logging in Mexico and the loss of the milkweed plant have also contributed to this massive disappearance. Because we are partly responsible for drastically reducing their numbers, it is our responsibility to protect the monarch butterfly under the Endangered Species Act to reverse the decline in their population.
Not only is this necessary for the monarch butterfly’s survival, but it is crucial for us as a species to learn how to coexist within our ecosystem without violently tipping the delicate balance. Each plant and animal plays a vital role in the existence of our environment, but our addiction to the overconsumption of resources and blind destruction of the land will be our undoing. Use your power to protect the monarch butterfly under the Endangered Species Act, instead of continuing its swift annihilation.
