Prevent Extinction of World’s Largest Mammal Species

Target: Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations

Goal: Take measures to stop impending mass extinction of large mammal species.

The largest mammals of the world are in direct danger of going extinct, according to a report from a group consisting of more than 40 conservation scientists. The report stresses that unless a concentrated global initiative is enacted, countless species, including the tiger, elephant, and water buffalo, will soon be gone forever.

Approximately 60 percent of the world’s biggest mammalian herbivore species and 59 percent of the largest carnivores are now on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species. This coalition of scientists lists a host of reasons for this potential mass extinction. Key factors include mostly man-made hazards, such as deforestation, poaching, and expansion of livestock and farming into areas inhabited by wild animals.

The loss of these species would have grave impacts for the entire ecosystem, as large mammals play important roles in their ecosystems. Large mammals typically disperse seeds, provide food for other animals, and perform plenty of other critical tasks.

Humans are responsible for this crisis, and our species must also be responsible for a solution. Sign the petition below to demand that more intensive efforts are set in motion to save these animals from extinction.

Dear Mr. Ban,

I am writing to address an extremely troubling report from a coalition of conservation scientists who claim that multiple species of large mammals are in danger of going extinct. According to this report, approximately 60 percent of the world’s biggest mammalian herbivore species and 59 percent of the largest carnivores could soon be wiped off the planet permanently.

The primary reasons for this pending mass extinction are all man-made and include poaching, deforestation, and habitat loss. We have the power to stop this crisis but only if a cooperative global effort is made.
