Release Penguins Kept At Inadequate Zoo to a Suitable Sanctuary

Target: Sanjay Tripathi, Director of Mumbai’s Byculla Zoo

Goal: Release eight captive Humboldt penguins from a miserable life at an inadequate facility unable to meet their natural needs.

A zoo in India has just flown in eight Humboldt penguins to keep them captive in an air-conditioned enclosure for the rest of their lives despite the vocal protests of animal activists and members of the public. These animals belong in the cool climate of the South American coast rather than Mumbai’s polluted and hot atmosphere. Worse yet, the city’s Municipal Corporation has spent the equivalent of hundreds of thousands of dollars to obtain these animals while the city’s residents suffer from poor infrastructure and water shortages.

There are only a few thousand Humboldt penguins left in the wild, and keeping eight of them caged and miserable at the Byculla Zoo does not help this species survive in its natural environment. Instead of helping visitors understand the existing threats to penguins in the wild, displaying depressed and frustrated animals encourages the public to believe that it is acceptable to cage animals for profit and deny them the freedom, space and environment they deserve.

Sign this petition urging the Byculla Zoo to release these animals to a suitable sanctuary and to ensure they do not repeat this mistake with more animals in the future.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Tripathi,

The Byculla Zoo’s decision to acquire and fly in eight Humboldt penguins was irresponsible and cruel. These animals belong in the cool climate of South America’s coast, swimming hundreds of miles each day, rather than confined to a temperature-controlled enclosure where they will never again experience the outdoors and be condemned to swim in the equivalent of a bathtub.

These animals will be entirely miserable in this artificial environment, worlds away from the space and freedom they deserve. Keeping these animals captive in such conditions runs the risk of making them severely depressed and sick. Moreover, it is reported that the penguins’ enclosure is not even ready yet, despite them having already arrived.

Please release the Humboldt penguins to a suitable sanctuary and refrain from importing any more animals to your zoo.

Sincerely,
