Save Animals From Suffering at Flea Market

Puppy Animals' Angels

Target: Steven Pockat, National Flea Market Association Administrator

Goal: End the sale of animals at flea markets.

In the hot Texas sun, investigators came to check out a flea market known for its Dog Alley. Dog Alley consists of hundreds of dogs stuck in metal cages under the sun. Investigators believe that some of the dogs came from puppy mills. Parvo was also running rampant among the dogs. As if this all wasn’t awful enough, after the flea market, the unsold dogs are typically abandoned at the site.

Dogs are not the only animals sold at this market. Birds, including chickens, turkeys and ducks, are sold as well. Chickens are stuffed in cages so tightly that they cannot turn around. One investigator saw a chicken pecking and eating at another chicken who could not escape because of the confinement. These birds are also typically left behind if they are not sold.

Rabbits, horses and other animals are sold at this market and their conditions are not any better. It is clear these animals are not respected or cared for in the least. Unfortunately, this is common among flea markets. Sign this petition and demand the National Flea Market Association ban the sale of animals.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Pockat,

In your mission statement, it is clear you want your flea markets to have “high standards of business conduct” which would then lead to “public trust.” This cannot be done until the sale of animals at flea markets ends.

Investigators went to the First Monday Trade Days market in Texas and what they found was sickening. Animals including dogs, horses, rabbits, chickens, ducks and turkeys, were out in the brutal sun with no access to water. Many of the animals were confined to metal cages with broken wire, and the birds were crammed so tightly that they could not even turn around. Parvo ran rampant among the dogs. As if these atrocities weren’t enough, many of the animals are abandoned after the market if they were not sold.

Unfortunately, this is not a one-time occurrence. Many markets sell animals in conditions that are just as awful, maybe even worse. Please consider banning the sale of animals at all flea markets.

Sincerely,
