Stop Testing Tobacco Products on Animals

Rat Janet Stephens

Target: Mitch Zeller, Director of Center for Tobacco Products, FDA

Goal: End the use of animals in tobacco product tests.

Due to the new tobacco products being released, including the e-cigarette, more animals will be subjected to harmful testing. Numerous cigarette companies already test on animals, however the growing market means more animals will be tested on.

Humans already know that smoking tobacco is harmful. Testing on these animals is completely unnecessary. Typically, rats are confined to inhalation tubes so small they cannot move a single limb, and they breathe in the smoke for hours. The rats are exposed to tobacco smoke in very different circumstances than humans are, which can drastically alter results.

These tests are unnecessary, painful, deadly, and do not provide accurate results. It is time that the use of animals for testing tobacco products be put to an end. Humans must accept and acknowledge the risks of using tobacco products.

Dear Mr. Zeller,

Many cigarette companies continue to test products on animals and new products, like the e-cigarette, means that even more animals will be tested on due to FDA standards. It is time this unnecessary testing be put to an end.

Humans already know that using tobacco products is harmful. Typically, rats are confined to inhalation tubes so small they cannot move a single limb while they breath in the smoke. This will be done for several hours. When humans are exposed to smoke, they are under much less stress, are able to move freely and are not exposed to the smoke for hours on end. These differences can drastically alter the results.

These painful, deadly, inaccurate and unnecessary tests must be put to an end. Please consider ending the use of animals for testing tobacco products.
