Stop Barbaric Animal Experimentation at Government Facility

Rhesus macaque

Target: Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for Health, England

Goal: Stop infecting animals with diseases for use in sickening government experiments.

Animals such as pigs, rabbits, and monkeys are being mutilated and infected with diseases in a controversial laboratory operated by the British government. Thousands of animals each year are subjected to these cruel experiments, usually conducted at the Porton Down facility. The experiments generally result in extreme pain, illness, and death.

One experiment saw nearly two dozen long-tailed macaques forced to inhale a strain of the smallpox virus. They started coughing only four days after being infected. Six days after infection, the animals were struggling to breathe, experiencing anorexia and severe weight loss, as well as high fevers. After 12 days, the monkeys were killed for dissection.

Another Public Health England test saw four rhesus macaques infected with tuberculosis for observation. They developed skin sores, experienced weight loss, and suffered through pneumonia. It is reported that two of them became so ill that they had to be put down before the experiment ended, at which point all of the monkeys were euthanized.

These cruel experiments result in unimaginable suffering for innocent animals and must be stopped immediately. With the strength of modern technology, it is possible to eliminate the use of animals in many experiments, thereby saving them from a life of excruciating pain and debilitating illness. Sign the petition below to demand that this cruel experimentation stops immediately.

Dear Mr. Hunt,

It was recently reported that animals at the Porton Down facility are subject to cruel experimentation, including the deliberate infection of macaques with diseases such as smallpox and tuberculosis. Pigs had their spleens removed and were then shot with with a bolt pistol to create severe muscular injuries in their rear thighs. Rabbits were shot with compressed air to simulate severe blast injuries and were kept alive and suffering for 12 hours before euthanasia.

Modern technology, including computer simulations, can eliminate the need for many of these barbaric and backward experiments. In order to save these innocent animals from weeks of suffering and eventual death, we must strive to implement these humane alternatives. We, the undersigned, demand that these shocking experiments are ceased immediately.

This is nothing less than Nazi-like experiments forced upon
innocent, unconsenting living beings… To treat these poor
animals like they are just disposable, even when an experiment goes wrong, as if it was ever “right” in the first place? When
is our world ever going to learn that all Life is an inter-
connected web, and “whatever we do to the web, we do to our-
selves” as Chief Seattle once said to the destructive white
American invaders… When are animals going to have some basic
rights in our world? It’s an obvious fact by now, that animals
are sentient beings — as innocent as human children — how
can our world just allow them to be treated like objects? How
can their suffering be ignored any longer? This would be a war crime if committed upon human subjects… Heaven help us all…
