Keep the Yellowstone Grizzly Federally Protected

Target: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Daniel Ashe

Goal: Keep the Yellowstone grizzly federally protected under the Endangered Species Act, continuing the health of the animal and its habitat.

The Yellowstone grizzly bear is at risk from losing its federally protected status under the Endangered Species Act. The delisting of this threatened animal will cause serious consequences for the grizzly bear and the Yellowstone ecosystem that supports it. Typically this proposal is a sign that the species is no longer in danger of extinction; however, the grizzly is still in great need of protection.

Grizzly bears are the slowest mammal to reproduce, and they cannot keep their population healthy without assistance. This is hindered further as their death rate by humans remains steadily high; 2015 ended with 61 bear mortalities just within the Yellowstone region. This demonstrates the delicate balance facing the grizzly, and the importance of maintaining the health of the species and the Yellowstone ecosystem.

Despite the proposal to delist the Yellowstone grizzly, there is no clear contingency plan to move forward. If federal protection funding lapsed, protection would fall to the states – however, the state plans are incomplete and do not factor the consequences of this proposal. This is why we must urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service to keep the Yellowstone grizzly federally protected under the Endangered Species Act.

Dear Director Daniel Ashe,

We are writing this petition to urge you to keep the Yellowstone grizzly bear under federal protection of the Endangered Species Act. This act has already done so much for this majestic species; however, it is not time to let go.

The effectiveness of the Endangered Species Act for the Yellowstone grizzly is clear. There were fewer than 200 grizzly bears alive in the Yellowstone wild in the 1970s – currently, there are more than 700. However, many issues still face the Yellowstone grizzly bear: violent human interactions, loss of habitat, and decreased food sources all plague this powerful animal. Without federal protection, the results could be catastrophic.

We cannot allow all this good work go to waste. The grizzly, and the Yellowstone ecosystem that supports it, need continued protection under the Endangered Species Act. Please do not continue with your proposal to delist this beautiful North American icon.
