Target: Chen Jining, Minister of Environmental Protection, People’s Republic of China
Goal: End government-assisted harvesting of endangered turtles and giant clams.
China has been killing giant clams, coral, and turtles, according to a recent investigation by an international tribunal. The report concludes that the government has not only been aware of the poaching of these endangered species, but has also participated in harvesting and killing these vulnerable animals.
The Permanent Court of Arbitration, an international justice initiative, was tasked with investigating claims that China has been damaging the South China Sea’s ecology. The panel found that China not only tolerated the poaching of endangered species, but also provided armed protection for the vessels slaughtering giant clams and turtles.
According to one of the experts on the panel, “China … [has] decided not to worry about the environmental aspect” of their actions. China has often denied allegations, but has fallen silent on this matter, suggesting that the nation is willing to admit its guilt. Sign the petition below and demand an end to this state-sponsored massacre.
Dear Mr. Chen,
I am writing in regards to the findings of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, which has determined that the Chinese government is not only aware of the poaching of giant clams and turtles, but actively participates in the harvesting of these valuable animals.
As an emerging world power, your nation has an obligation to respect the environment. To exploit endangered species for profit is unethical and potentially illegal, and I urge you to re-consider your policies. These animals are on the verge of extinction and deserve protection. Please increase protections for these animals and end the state-sponsored massacre.
