Stop Safari Organization From Hunting Endangered Species

Elephant_Rob_Hooft

Target: Warren A. Sackman, III, President of Safari Club International Foundation

Goal: End all trophy hunting of endangered species and stop lobbying for legislation that would allow for increased trophy hunting.

Trophy hunting of wild animals, particularly in Africa, is being directed and encouraged by Safari Club International, an organization founded in the 1970s. Safari Club International (SCI) claims two goals: protecting hunters and conserving wildlife. While SCI has done some good in the past in conserving wildlife and taking an anti-poaching stance, the group is comprised of hunters and the primary purpose remains killing for sport and obtaining trophies of the animals’ bodies.

On a small scale, hunting even for sport is not going to dramatically alter or damage an ecosystem, but SCI is comprised of over 50,000 hunters in 180 regional chapters. Over 25,000 members met at a recent convention held annually where hunters display their trophies. A group of active hunters of this size will inevitably cause harm to virtually any ecosystem, especially as human growth continues to push back natural habitats for these animals into ever more confined areas of the globe and ever smaller populations.

This continued killing for the sake of killing is made even more disturbing by the gratuitous award system for kills. The animals’ bodies are measured and medals and awards given for the largest and most unique animals killed. This glorification of killing without purpose is damaging to these animals and at no real benefit to humankind either. Continued killing aimed directly at the largest and most majestic animals may also have the unintended evolutionary effect of reducing the average size of hunted animals in these wild populations and will mean future generations of conservationists will not be able to see or appreciate the full natural beauty of these animals alive today.

SCI has done damage to endangered species by lobbying Congress to allow for increased hunting of polar bears in the arctic, arguing that climate change wasn’t a threat to polar bear populations, and has been criticized by the Humane Society of the United States for encouraging hunting of leopards, elephants, rhinos, and endangered African antelopes. The SCI website brags that they have spent $140 million since 2000 lobbying in Washington. Please sign the petition below to demand reform and encourage greater protection for endangered species from trophy hunting and an end to this paid Congressional lobbying.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Sackman,

While Safari Club International has done much good to encourage awareness and conservation of animals, it has also done too little to protect endangered species from trophy hunters and too much to try to decrease government protection when it is convenient for hunters. With that in mind, I write to you in the hopes that SCI can turn its conservation failures into an opportunity for greater animal protection in the future.

The SCI website boasts of having spent $140 million since 2000 alone on congressional lobbying. In the past, SCI has repeatedly lobbied against protections for polar bears, even denying climate change to do so, to name but one species. Imagine if that $140 million had been spent actually protecting the lives and well-being of these endangered creatures instead of paying lobbyists and representatives to eliminate their protections.

I am writing to ask that you encourage funding science-based conservation efforts instead of lobbying for decreased regulations in the future. The health of the animal populations is not only a practical concern, but also an ethical concern, and I hope with that in mind that you will push for the right decisions to be made in the future.

Sincerely,

I LIVE IN LAS VEGAS, NEVADA AND WHEN THESE MURDERERS OF BIG GAME FOR TROPHIES HAD THEIR CONVENTION IN LV NV, I PARTICIPATED IN #EndTrophyHunting TWEETSTORM ON TWITTER.
I AND MY PHONE (I TWEETSTORMED WITH MY PHONE) RECEIVED IMMENSE ILLEGAL RETAILIATION.
THESE MURDERERS OF WILDLIFE AND THE LV NV ETC HOTELS & CASINOS ETC THAT PROMOTE ETC TO THESE MURDERERS NEED TO BE FORCED TO CONTRIBUTE TO ENDING TROPHY HUNTING,CANNED HEATS ETC !

Good on you Mary, and sincere thanks for your effort!
It would be wonderful if these people really did put money where mouth is and do a hell of a lot more good with genuine protection towards all animal species. Some members really believe for the ‘few’ they kill their hunting fee likewise saves endangered species, BUT it doesn’t.
Much of it rarely gets to the animal side of things with all the corruption and bribery that goes on.
Sad state of affairs. Should ban the lot of them from killing any animal.

  3. William Eaves says:

I am surprised that in a civilised country such a club is allowed to even exist. Surely a gang of thugs devoted to killing should be illegal ?

These murdering b*st*rds should not be allowed to leave the USA.

Did I really use the word ‘civilised’ in the first sentence, it is based in the USA after all – where any moron can just go and buy guns !

In a genuinely civilised nation such a club WOULD of course be outlawed.

Hunting of all animals should and MUST have a blanket ban! The way man is doing this in the numbers it is doing will leave practically no wildlife for future generations to enjoy.Something must be done before it is too late and a start would be for “trophy hunting safaris” to be closed down for good!

  5. Sandra Reeves says:

The government’s are corrupt. They allow poaching or through “hunt clubs”. They get paid by both. A human disgrace.

  6. Jonathan Coombe says:

Let’s have a cull of the human race. There are far too many of us, so let’s begin by taking out all the psycho bastards who participate in this cruel and sick activity!

  7. Sylvia thomas says:

I only pray horrible death to those hunt for joy … Karma can be a bitch!!

  8. I am at once appalled and disgusted at the whole gung-ho shooting bananza that so many monied people seem to want to follow and even more appalled that the SCI has seen fit to pay $US 140,000,000 since 2000, simply to fight congress in its ethical battles to stop these shootings which is so desperately tried to be justified in the name of conservation, when such money could have been actively put to protecting these same animals and their habitats, in the wild. You think that those without guns, or without the inclination to kill anything that moves on four legs because it is illegal to shoot people, are stupid and take us for such. Those who are so opposed to this find the whole concept of taking cubs from mothers to place in the constant hands of tourists, in a concerted effort to teach them to trust the very wardens who will one day hand them over to a man with a high-velocity rifle or a crossbow absolutely beneath the higher echelons of thought and knowledge for the wider world, other than themselves, their guns, money and their tiny pointed minds. Woolly sheep who absolutely must have another head on their ‘look what I’ve done’ walls.
