Goal: YB Datuk Seri Panglima Masidi Manjun, Bornean Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment
Target: Strengthen protections for critically endangered orangutans.
The Bornean orangutan is now officially listed as “critically endangered.” Based on research from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), these precious animals now face an “extremely high risk of extinction in the wild.”
In making their assessment, the IUCN listed habitat destruction and degradation, along with hunting and poaching, as the significant factors for the dramatically thinned orangutan population. As of 2010, only 59.6 percent of Borneo’s forests were found to be habitable and government protections have done little to help these animals, as illegal logging operations have gone largely unchecked.
Humans have endangered these animals, and now it is time for humans to save them. Sign the petition below and demand that the government take action before these valuable creatures are gone forever.
Dear Mr. Manjun,
I am writing to bring your attention to the plight of the Bornean orangutan, which is now officially listed as “critically endangered.” Due to illegal logging operations, poaching, and forest destruction, these precious creatures are now on the verge of being wiped out permanently.
As is often the case, human interference has decimated the population of yet another species. These animals cannot recover without a concentrated effort, and I urge you to strengthen protections before the orangutan is lost forever.
