Justice for Shark Killed for Photo Opportunity

Target: Dr. Bautista Rojas Gómez, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources of the Dominican Republic

Goal: Find and punish individuals responsible for dragging a shark out of the ocean and killing it.

A shark has reportedly died after being pulled out of the ocean by a group of lifeguards and tourists. In a video that is spreading across social media, several men can be seen dragging the animal out of the water and then posing for photographs with tourists next to the lifeless body. This cruel and inhumane treatment of such a valuable animal cannot be tolerated, and the people responsible must be held accountable.

According to multiple outlets, several of the people allegedly involved are employed as lifeguards at the nearby Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana. Whether the individuals involved are experienced professionals or tourists making their first beach visit, there is no excuse for such behavior.

The Hard Rock Hotel has already pledged to investigate the incident, but such inhumane behavior demands further legal action. Sign the petition below and demand that these employees and tourists be punished to the full extent of the law.

Dear Dr. Gómez,

I am writing to call your attention to a recent video in which a group of people drag a shark from the ocean and pose for photographs with its lifeless body. Though sharks may have a reputation for being deadly predators, they deserve the same protection and right to life as other animals, and I urge you to find the individuals responsible and punish them justly.

The graphic video in question shows a group of men violently pulling the shark using ropes, then prodding it with a wooden plank. For this valuable and precious creature to die just so a few people can pose for a picture is simply cruel and inhumane. Please ensure that this animal’s death does not go unpunished.

  1. Wouldn’t many people like to have Kama happen swiftly to everyone of these thoughtlessly abased sub human beings!
How stupidly cruel and heartless they look to the vast majority of the world, even they think it looked ‘cool’…Shame on all of you!

  2. Stephanie Geyser says:

That’s one country I certainly WON’T be visiting, if this is the “entertainment” that is provided for tourists.

  3. The fact that anyone would think it acceptable to drag an innocent animal out of the only environment it can survive in for something as superficial as a photo speaks volumes about our society. They didn’t even see this shark as a living, feeling being with the RIGHT to live and not be harassed (and in this case tortured). All they cared about was what THEY wanted, even if it resulted in the death of another living being. It’s even more disturbing that these were adults…what does this teach children, when adults treat animals as “things”? We’re becoming a world of sociopaths.

  4. Tony DeLia Tony DeLia says:

I am very glad that I learned of this as I was considering a trip to the Punta Cana HR.Now I am going to make sure the management knows why they will not be receiving any of my business and likely the business of many others I can make aware of this.

  5. Cecelia Nelson says:

Sharks are DECLINING quickly and DO NOT reproduce any quicker. SHAME ON US for OUR CRUELTY to these and ALL animals

  6. nancy zebracki says:

they should kill the guy who took a photo of the dead shark, then we’ll take a photo of him

  7. Lisa Zarafonetis Lisa Zarafonetis says:

    Signed & Shared. 😠

  8. Bev Woodburn says:

Shame to the human species who commit these atrocities against helpless and innocent sentient beings.
The subhuman bastards who committed this sadism and evilness must be brought to Justice and jailed for deliberate animal cruelty and suffering.
    Better still kill them off.
