Target: Dr. Bautista Rojas Gómez, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources of the Dominican Republic
Goal: Find and punish individuals responsible for dragging a shark out of the ocean and killing it.
A shark has reportedly died after being pulled out of the ocean by a group of lifeguards and tourists. In a video that is spreading across social media, several men can be seen dragging the animal out of the water and then posing for photographs with tourists next to the lifeless body. This cruel and inhumane treatment of such a valuable animal cannot be tolerated, and the people responsible must be held accountable.
According to multiple outlets, several of the people allegedly involved are employed as lifeguards at the nearby Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana. Whether the individuals involved are experienced professionals or tourists making their first beach visit, there is no excuse for such behavior.
The Hard Rock Hotel has already pledged to investigate the incident, but such inhumane behavior demands further legal action. Sign the petition below and demand that these employees and tourists be punished to the full extent of the law.
Dear Dr. Gómez,
I am writing to call your attention to a recent video in which a group of people drag a shark from the ocean and pose for photographs with its lifeless body. Though sharks may have a reputation for being deadly predators, they deserve the same protection and right to life as other animals, and I urge you to find the individuals responsible and punish them justly.
The graphic video in question shows a group of men violently pulling the shark using ropes, then prodding it with a wooden plank. For this valuable and precious creature to die just so a few people can pose for a picture is simply cruel and inhumane. Please ensure that this animal’s death does not go unpunished.
