Ban Live Animal Exports After Cattle Bludgeoned to Death

Target: Malcolm Turnbull, Prime Minister of Australia

Goal: Suspend Australia’s live animal trade until all supply chains have been proven secure and up to animal welfare standards.

Shocking video footage recently emerged of cattle being bludgeoned to death with sledgehammers at a Vietnamese slaughterhouse. The cattle appear to have been exported from Australia based on the Australian tags visible in the video, putting the country’s live animal trade into question. The footage was secretly taped by animal protection organization Animals Australia and shows the animals tied up, unable to escape, while mercilessly bludgeoned by men with sledgehammers. At least five of the cattle are bashed in the skull. The pain these animals must have felt is unimaginable, and this kind of cruelty should never be permitted to take place.

The video sparked outrage, and animal rights activists have been urging the government to suspend live animal trade. According to Lyn White, Animals Australia’s chief investigator, “the only appropriate industry response is to voluntarily suspend the trade until they can publicly declare that Australian animals are not at risk of further abuse.” Similarly, the animal protection organization Voiceless has been urging Prime Minister Turnbull to “bring an end to this trade, or at the very least, to suspend exports to Vietnam pending a thorough and independent investigation of these systematic failings.” While exports to the three abattoirs featured in the footage have been suspended, the government is unwilling to ban the live animal trade despite the evidence of its flaws.

The horrific abuse of the cattle gained attention because it was caught on tape, but many other instances of similar abuse are undoubtedly occurring behind the scenes every day. Sign the petition below to urge the Australian government to fully investigate the live export industry and suspend the trading of live animals until it is definite that no more abuse will take place.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Prime Minister Turnbull,

Animals Australia recently released video footage of cattle being bludgeoned to death with sledgehammers. At least five of the animals were bashed in the skull while tied up and trying hopelessly to escape. This horrific abuse took place at a Vietnamese abattoir and the cattle appeared to have Australian tags, suggesting that they were brought there through Australia’s live animal trade.

Animals Australia’s chief investigator, Lyn White, has spoken out against the live export industry, stating that trade must be voluntarily suspended “until “they can publicly declare that Australian animals are not at risk of further abuse.” Many other animal rights activists are in agreement, as it is likely that this kind of abuse occurs far too often behind the scenes. Suspending exports to the Vietnamese abattoirs is a step in the right direction, but further action is needed to ensure the safety of Australia’s animals.

No animal should have to suffer the way these cattle did. I am urging you to suspend the trading of live animals, at least until a thorough investigation of the industry has taken place. Please take action to increase animal welfare standards and end abuse in the live animal export industry.

Sincerely,

  1. My heart is so heavy for these poor innocent animals. No living being deserves such immense torture and suffering. How can any living being be so cruel, heartless and violent to another living being? Animals were not born into this world for humans to exploit. Animals also have a right to live on this planet free from exploitation just like humans. We must respect others-human and non human beings. Someday our time will come. We are all perishable.

I would like to bludgeon these cruel scum of the earth – can you imagine the trauma these animals were subjected to – please stop exporting live animals to these countries

  7. Barbara Griffith says:

A lot of organizations have been trying to stop the live shipment of livestock to these third world countries for years. No one understands just why the Australian government refuses to simply butcher them there in a slaughter house under controlled conditions instead of shipping them half way around the world in ships on which many of them die during the trip. I saw photos of the animals stuffed together amid piles of manure, I don’t know if they are given hay and water or not. Sheep are also shipped the same way and end up the same way except in the Middle East they have their throats slit.

Must be cheaper to have them killed by the Vietscumese who have the expertise gained from brutalising countless dogs, not to mention millions of other animals. Eating endangered species obviously isn’t enough for them. Shame on the Oz Govt knowingly to let these peaceful beings go to such a grim death.

  8. what is wrong with the people that do this. They are sadistic and cruel. They need to be done the same way.Even though these animals are raised to be
slaughtered they deserve a quick painless(as possible) death. This needs to be stopped. These people need to be reprimanded and made to show some
mercy. No animals should be exported to other countries. There needs to be
strict abuse laws made all over the world, and they should be enforced.

  9. Sophie Debbane says:

    Cowardly, despicable, evil, sadistic.
