Target: Mary E. Rain, District Attorney, St. Lawrence County

Goal: Punish woman accused of tying up a severely neglected senior dog and leaving it in a ditch to die.

A dog had to be euthanized after it was found severely neglected and tied up in a ditch to die. Joe, a 12-year-old Cocker Spaniel, was found near a busy highway with his hind legs tied up with a Christmas garland. The woman who found him reported that he was so emaciated that his spine and ribs were clearly visible. A board member at the Potsdam Humane Society said that this is the worst case of neglect she has ever seen.

Joe was transported to the Potsdam Humane Society, where veterinarians found that he had infected eyes, nails so overgrown that he could not walk properly, and rotting teeth. Joe also had Lyme disease, an illness with symptoms that range from jaw pain and muscle aches to paralysis. Unfortunately, because the dog would suffer serious pain for the rest of its life as a result of this neglect, the dog was euthanized.

The dog’s owner was tracked down after an investigation and charged with one count of animal cruelty for the suspected neglect and abandonment of this elderly dog. In a smug and unrepentant display, she made rude gestures at animal rights protesters gathered outside of the court. In order to ensure that justice is served for this poor dog, its cruel abuser must be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Sign the petition below to urge the prosecutor to seek the harshest possible penalty against the person found guilty of this crime.

Dear Ms. Rain,

A woman is facing animal cruelty charges after her dog was found tied up and left in a ditch to die. The emaciated dog was found with infected eyes, overgrown nails, rotten teeth, and Lyme disease. Because of the shocking neglect it suffered, the dog was in such poor health that he was euthanized.

This elderly dog suffered ongoing neglect before simply being discarded by its owner despite the fact that several shelters and rescue agencies exist in the area. We, the undersigned, ask that you seek the harshest possible punishment for the person convicted of this shocking and deliberate act of cruelty.
