Stop Killing Lion Cubs

Lioness and cub

Target: Thulani Nzima, Chairperson of the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency

Goal: Release escaped lions back into national park and do not kill any more escaped animals.

Two lion cubs and their mom were allegedly viciously shot by park rangers. We need to take action to ensure that no more innocent animals are needlessly killed.

After 10 lions escaped Kruger National Park in South Africa, park rangers apparently decided to hide behind an animal carcass and to shoot the lions as soon as they returned to the area. While only three lions have allegedly been shot so far, the rangers reportedly plan to also kill the other escaped lions if they find them.

Officials claim that shooting the lions is necessary since there is livestock located outside of the park that they would easily have access to if they were to escape again. However, when one considers that such logic means numerous lions could be shot if they were also to escape, taking or condoning this action simply doesn’t make sense.

Demand all other escaped lions be returned safely to the national park and that future similar incidences are handled humanely. Killing these majestic creatures today will only ensure that they are gone tomorrow.

Dear Chairperson Nzima,

Park officials are accused of shooting and killing two lion cubs and a lioness after 10 lions escaped from Kruger National Park. It is important that all other lions in this particular pride be returned safely to the park and that such issues are handled differently in the future in order to ensure that lions will be able to thrive in South Africa.

Although it is claimed that these lions need to be shot to prevent them from eating livestock in surrounding areas, such logic does not make sense when it is considered that all escaped lions could also be shot for the same reason. Doing this is not only inhumane, but it further likely ensures that the lion population will eventually greatly dwindle. Using a tranquilizer gun to sedate the escaped animals for the purpose of returning them to the national park is a much more humane way to deal with this issue.

I therefore urge you to make sure the seven other lions thought to be on the loose are safely returned to the national park and to further change any policies that allow for escaped animals to be shot and killed. Killing lions today will only ensure that they will one day be extinct.

  1. Bev Woodburn says:

These gun happy murdering monsters are probably enjoying the kill so they can make their blood money by selling these precious sentient beings to the black market.

  2. I don’t see the need to destroy these beautiful creatures at all. Moreover it is the Kruger National Park’s fault that they escaped. Please show some respect for these animals and stop the unnecessary killing!!!
