Save the Ocean’s Giant Fish

Mangrove Red Snapper

Target: President of the Philippines Benigno S. Aquino III

Goal: Save the giant fish species that are being wiped out from over-fishing practices around coral reefs.

Species of giant fish are vanishing from the coral reefs around the Philippines due to mass over-fishing practices that have been going on for decades. A recent study found that the green bumphead parrotfish, the humphead wrasse, the African pompano, the giant grouper, and the mangrove red snapper have all but disappeared from the waters at similar rates to large land species like pandas and elephants.

Due to the fragility of coral ecosystems, the loss of large species like this is threatening many other marine species. Some of these fish are major predators, and others eat only certain types of coral, creating space for a greater diversity of coral species. A lack of biodiversity is a serious threat to any ecosystem.

Researchers interviewed fishermen around the Philippines and found that where these giant fish species used to be common, they now rarely turn up in nets. This combined with global warming that’s causing huge sections of coral reefs to die out could spell impending doom for these beautiful and essential ecosystems. This also represents a threat to the livelihoods of the fishing villages in the area.

At this point, the only way to save the giant fish species around the Philippines is through direct government action. Sign our petition to demand that the government of the Philippines steps up to end over-fishing and grants protections to these vulnerable species.

Dear Mr. President,

A recent study found that species of giant fish living in the coral reefs around the Philippines have been vanishing at an alarming rate and are now rarely seen in the area. This is alarming news considering how important large and predatory fish species are to any marine ecosystem, particularly in the fragile environment of coral reefs. The culprit in this loss is largely over-fishing.

Coral reefs are already taking a hit from global warming, with large sections of coral dying out. The loss of fish species like the green bumphead parrotfish, the humphead wrasse, the African pompano, the giant grouper, and the mangrove red snapper could devastate these ecosystems even further. This is not only tragic for the many marine species that rely on coral reefs, but it could cause serious harm to the economies of fishing villages around the Philippines and in the rest of the country.

To protect your nation, you must protect your giant fish species. Please do everything you can to end over-fishing in coral reefs and implement protections for the vulnerable giant fish species before they disappear forever.
