Justice for Dog Allegedly Killed by Groomer

Target: Micheal J. Massey, CEO of PetSmart

Goal: Fire dog groomer reportedly responsible for the death of a dog within his care.

A dog was allegedly killed by its groomer at a San Mateo PetSmart location. The dog, a 1-year-old male dachshund named Henry, was only inside the grooming room for a couple of minutes before groomer Juan Zarate brought him out and claimed he was having a medical emergency. According to police, the dog was bleeding from the mouth and struggling to breathe.

Despite the best efforts of an on-site veterinarian to help him, Henry died a short time later. A postmortem x-ray showed that the dog suffered two broken ribs and a punctured lung. While the owner is still waiting on an official necropsy, the injuries appear to be consistent with the dog being slammed onto the grooming table with force.

A police investigation determined that the dog’s death was likely due to deliberate actions by the groomer. He was arrested at the scene and felony animal cruelty charges have been laid. PetSmart has suspended the employee pending an internal investigation. The company is also working with Henry’s owner to help the animal cruelty investigation in any way it can.

When an owner drops a pet off to be groomed, they expect that the dog is in good hands. Not only should grooming companies perform thorough background checks on employees, but they should do everything in their power to ensure that animals within their care are treated right. Sign the petition below to demand that PetSmart fire the employee and review its groomer hiring process in order to ensure that cruel people like these are not allowed to work with pets.

Dear Mr. Massey,

A 1-year-old dachshund recently died while in the care of a PetSmart groomer. The dog, named Henry, was only in the grooming room for three minutes before the groomer emerged, stating that the dog was having a medical emergency. The dog was bleeding from his mouth and unable to breathe and died a few minutes later due to a punctured lung.

While an official necropsy has not yet been performed, the dog’s injuries are consistent with being slammed on a grooming table. A preliminary police investigation concluded that the dog likely died to the deliberate actions of the groomer. While the man has been suspended, this is not enough. We ask that he is fired and that PetSmart conduct a review of its hiring process to ensure that people like these are not allowed to handle pets.

Complete shitty person. Best not to leave ones pets with others. Very very bad people all over the place. Learn how to groom on ones own.

  3. The cruelty and sadism is beyond the pale — Hold the groomer accountable & ensure punishment fits this horrific crime — transfer groomer to a rubber room for psychiatric analysis — he’s a danger to all who are innocent and vulnerable — ensure groomer stays away from animals from this day forward.

  4. Supervise your pets — ALWAYS KEEP AN EYE OUT — every nanosecond matters!
