Target: Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy
Goal: Prohibit wild animals from being used in circuses where they suffer from confinement and brutal training.
A hippopotamus escaped from a circus and ran loose in a small town before being cornered and returned to confinement. This incident, which occurred in the Spanish town of Palos de la Frontera, proves that wild animals do not belong in circuses where they are confined for most of their lives, trained using brutal methods and forced to perform difficult tricks. They never experience freedom, roam in their natural environment or form social bonds with members of their species as they would in the wild.
Moreover, animals that escape from circuses, zoos and other establishments that keep them for entertainment pose a serious risk to the public, as well as to other animals. Spain is one of the few countries in the European Union that still allows circuses with wild animals. One of its regions, Catalonia, has already banned the use of wild animals, but the country as a whole must prohibit circuses from keeping wildlife for the sake of both animals and residents.
Sign this petition urging Spanish lawmakers to urgently ban circuses from keeping wild animals.
Dear Prime Minister Rajoy,
The hippopotamus that escaped from a circus and roamed the streets of Palos de la Frontera proves that wild animals do not belong in entertainment. Aside from the animals themselves suffering immensely from constant confinement and brutal training in the circus industry, they can also pose serious risks to the public when at large.
Please ban the use of wild animals in circuses immediately, as other EU countries and Catalonia have done already.
