Save Starving Chimpanzee Abandoned On Island

Target: Howard P. Milstein, Chairman of the New York Blood Center

Goal: Pay to move stressed and lonely chimpanzee to proper sanctuary.

A chimpanzee that was abandoned on an island after years of medical testing is the only one left alive out of a group of 20. We need to take action to ensure this animal is moved to a proper sanctuary.

Ponso and 19 other chimpanzees were callously dropped off and left on an island near the Ivory Coast over 30 years ago. The animals were dumped there by the New York Blood Center (NYBC) after they were done using them for medical testing. Eventually all of the chimpanzees, except for Ponso, died due to the hardships they endured.

Estelle Raballand, the founder of the Chimpanzee Conservation Center, has recently taken blood tests to see if Ponso is healthy enough to move to a sanctuary. Although she and nearby citizen Germaine Jamal have been feeding Ponso and doing everything in their power to make this possible, the task cannot be accomplished unless adequate funding is available.

Demand the NYBC pay to have Ponso moved to a proper sanctuary if his blood tests indicate he is healthy enough to be relocated, or that they pay for needed food supplies if he cannot be moved. Ponso served this company for years. It’s high time they do something for him.

Dear Mr. Milstein,

Out of the 20 chimpanzees your company abandoned on an island near Ivory Coast in the 1980’s, only one animal is still alive. Since this animal served your purposes for years, he deserves to live out the rest of his life in a proper sanctuary.

When NYBC cut off food and water for the abandoned chimpanzees, the animals struggled to survive. In fact, all of the animals except Ponso were dead by the year 2013. Since chimpanzees thrive in groups, Ponso will likely not survive much longer if he is not placed with other animals of his own kind.

Ponso’s blood is currently being analyzed to make sure he is healthy enough to move to a proper sanctuary. Contrarily, this cannot happen unless funding is available to relocate him.

I therefore urge you to pay for Ponso to be relocated to a sanctuary, or to pay for his food supplies for the rest of his life if tests show it is unsafe to place him in an environment with other animals. You have an ethical obligation to help the animals that have served you.

  1. could ponzo be a psycho chimp killer ? Is that why he is alone. Like the donner party. Do you think ponzo cannablized his fellow test chimps? If I were a chimp I’d be scared of Ponzo
