Target: Dr. Nick Smith, New Zealand Minister for the Environment
Goal: Ban inhumane pig farrowing crates that tightly enclose sows so that the animals can’t even turn around.
Farrowing crates continue to be used in factory farms that breed pigs for human consumption, despite the fact that the crates are incredibly cruel. Female breeding pigs are kept in these narrow metal stalls their entire lives, with the aim being to restrict the sows’ movements so that they cannot even turn around. New Zealand’s National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (NAWAC) has authorized the continued use of these crates after a specific review into welfare concerns regarding the crates. We must act now to stop the use of these inhumane crates.
Anyone allowing the use of these crates to remain legal clearly does not have the welfare of animals at heart. Breeding and slaughtering animals for meat is inherently cruel, but restricting sentient and intelligent beings to metal enclosures for their entire lives is beyond inhumane.
Sign this petition urging authorities to ban this cruel enclosure at once.
Dear Dr. Smith,
It is shocking that farrowing crates are still being used in intensive pig farming in this day and age, considering how inhumane they are. Sows are confined in these small metal enclosures for their entire lives. They are so narrow that the animals cannot even turn around. The NAWAC’s recent review, concluding that this is the best system to meet the welfare of pigs, is incredibly shocking and disturbing and should be contested at once.
We demand that farrowing crates are banned immediately to ensure that no more animals have to suffer from this incredibly cruel method of confinement.
