Don’t Allow Animal Abusers to Buy More Pets

Sad-dog-by-latteda

Target: Toni Preckwinkle, Cook County Board President

Goal: Implement animal abuse registry prohibiting convicted animal abusers from buying or adopting pets.

A proposed law could protect countless animals by prohibiting abusers from buying or adopting animals for 15 years or more after their conviction. Commissioner John Fritchey for Cook County, Illinois has proposed an animal abuse registry ordinance, which, if passed, could ensure perpetrators of animal cruelty are not allowed to acquire pets.

The ordinance would require convicted animal abusers to register their names and addresses on a specific database and allow pet shops and shelters to check the registry before selling or adopting an animal out. This measure is essential as it would mean that known animal abusers are not allowed to endanger more animals, as is regrettably still the case.

Sign this petition urging lawmakers to pass this vital ordinance to protect countless animals from cruelty.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ms. Preckwinkle,

Please ensure Commissioner John Fritchey’s ordinance for an animal abuser registry is passed. This vital measure would protect countless animals by prohibiting convicted animal abusers from buying or adopting pets for 15 years or more after their conviction.

Requiring convicted animal abusers to register their names and addresses on a database and asking pet shops and shelters to check the registry before selling or adopting an animal out is essential to protecting animals. I urge you to make sure this vital ordinance is passed in order to shield countless animals from preventable cruelty.

Sincerely,

How about instead of “allowing pet shops to check the registry” REQUIRING they do and PROHIBITNG the sale of pets to anyone on the registry? MANY owners of pet shops have no interest in the well being of the animals they sell.

    • I agree and they can attack stray animals too! Your cat or your dog can be kidnapped and tortured/abused etc, oh hell farm and wild animals are not safe too. Pet shops with animals must be banned.

      • Or, as some cities are now doing, pet shops if they exist must be stocked ONLY with dogs & cats, puppies & kittens from shelters and rescue groups!

THIS is an idea which works, and doesn’t put the pet shop owner totally out of business, and most of all benefits the shelter and rescued animals!

I totally agree with you both. It should be a lifetime ban though, not just 15 yrs (or more after conviction). You can’t tell me after that they wouldn’t do it again.

  4. I AM IN AGREEMENT. NEVER SHOULD THESE EVIL PIECES OF EXCREMENT EVER BE ALLOWED NEAR AN ANIMAL/PET AGAIN. I CAN’T WAIT TO WEAR MY, “PUT ANIMAL ABUSERS TO SLEEP”, TEE SHIRT!

  5. Samantha Brady says:

Once an abuser, always an abuser! They should all be left to rot in jail!
Us normal people have to be the voice for animals and stand up for them. Never allow an animal abuser to ever own another again!

    • The judges that sentence animal abusers often don’t seem to even THINK to ban pet ownership…..it should be a common reaction! Not sure how to get the message out to judges in general……any animal abuser needs to be banned for life from owning any other pets or animals.
