Use Non-Lethal Methods to Relocate Rats

Rats by Kapa65

Target: Steve Bradford, Governor of HMP Wormwood Scrubs

Goal: Deal with rat problem in a humane way to send the right message to prison inmates.

A prison’s critical report has found a string of issues and failings, including a problem with rats. The unwanted residents of Wormwood Scrubs prison in London risk being caught in cruel glue or bone-crushing traps, or exterminated with rat poison.

Animal rights charity PETA UK has sent the prison a humane rat trap and shared useful advice on how to deal with the issue. This includes capturing rats in humane traps to release them in unpopulated areas and making the environment less inviting by sealing gaps in walls and keeping food items in sealed containers.

According to the charity, choosing non-lethal, humane traps would “set the right example to prisoners that all living beings deserve to be treated in a non-violent, compassionate and respectful manner.” Rats are gentle and smart animals and are remarkably clean, so much so that they are widely kept as pets. Along with all other animals, rats deserve to be treated compassionately.

Sign this petition urging prison authorities to deal with the rats humanely.

Dear Mr. Bradford,

I would like to urge you to deal with Wormwood Scrubs’ rat problem in a humane and non-lethal manner. This would send prisoners the vital message that all living creatures should be treated with respect and kindness. On the contrary, a violent extermination method would signal to inmates that harming and killing other beings is acceptable.

Moreover, rats are no different than companion animals—in fact they are often kept as pets—and like them all other animals, they deserve our compassion and kindness. Please implement the valuable advice sent to you by PETA UK on humanely dealing with the rat problem.

Rats are the most environmental animals. They eat all the crap humans buy and throw. They don’t destroy nature, they live where they can. Humans are the parasites on this earth.

The use of “humane” live capture traps is surely preferable to the use of rat poison, but the problem with live release traps is that you may end up releasing the rat/s into the territory of another rat or other rats, and they may fight and get hurt. A repellent is, maybe, a better option because yes, the rats are driven away, but they can make their own way…

  4. “Rats are gentle and smart animals and are remarkably clean, so much so that they are widely kept as pets.” So true, many people have misconceptions about rats, even googling “misconceptions about rats” will show how intelligent and caring these beings are. Just like anything, they should live a life free from pain and suffering.
