Punish Animal Abuse On Par With Other Violent Crimes

Target: Michael Gove, British Secretary of State for Justice

Goal: Punish animal abusers as severely as other criminals by increasing maximum jail time.

Animal abusers in the United Kingdom currently only face a maximum of 26 weeks in prison for subjecting innocent creatures to unimaginable cruelty. Furthermore, most convicted perpetrators never actually spend any time behind bars. They are often given no jail time or a suspended sentence that they will never serve. This is the case for a farmer who mistreated hundreds of cows as well as two brothers who repeatedly threw their pet dog down the stairs, among numerous others.

Currently, the owner of a dog who attacks a guide dog faces up to three years in prison, but if that same owner beats or even kills their dog, the most they face is six months’ imprisonment.

The derisory punishments people convicted of animal cruelty face sends the harmful message that abusing animals is not a serious crime. Abusers desperately need harsher sentences to ensure animals are better protected by the law.

Sign this petition demanding that the maximum jail time faced by animal abusers is increased on par with other serious crimes.

Dear Mr. Gove,

Animal abusers in the U.K. currently face a maximum of 26 weeks in prison, no matter how horrific the cruelty inflicted. Cases of animal abuse have become abundant, and more often than not perpetrators get off with a mere slap on the wrist. This was the case of the Glenavy farmer from whom 153 dying cows were seized as well as the two brothers from Redcar who repeatedly threw their pet dog down the stairs, among others.

The law currently holds that the owner of a dog who attacks a guide dog can be sentenced to three years in prison. Yet, if that same owner beats or even kills their dog, they face a mere maximum of six months. We desperately need harsher sentences for animal abusers in order to signal that the crime is being taken seriously.

We demand that animal abuse is treated as seriously as other crimes and that jail time faced by perpetrators is increased accordingly.

  1. DEMAND, is right! Otherwise, we’re all going to end up HAVING to take justice into our own hands, if that’s what they’d prefer. And there’s no room for all of US as well, in the prisons.
